Page #2 - Set up for a Chain

To make the stitch, you need to set-up the thread on your non-shuttle hand (for me it is my left because I am right-handed) into kind of a loom to weave the shuttle through.

I have tried a few ways of wrapping the pink for a chain, and this is by far the best!

Here I have taken my 2 shuttles, wound with contrasting thread, and tied the ends together with an overhand knot. alt text
Pinch that overhand knot between the thumb and index fingers of your non-shuttle hand. This is, for some reason, called "the pinch" alt text
Take the darker of the threads and send it over the back of your hand and let it dangle. There is a shuttle dangling on either side of "the pinch" alt text
Take your index finger and pull the dark thread forward, between the pinky and ring finger. alt text
Hook it down and around the pink - look carefully at the thread on my pinky. alt text
Continue to wrap the thread around your pinky in this direction a few times, until the thread is anchored.

If you have never tatted before, you won't yet appreciate the difference in which way to wrap the pinky. But believe me, with this method the thread will knot less and you can adjust the length of the set-up thread so easily, it is like a dream! If you are a tatter, try this!

By the way, don't worry about how purple my pinky is turning, it's not that tight, I just have bad circulation.
