Quiet and enigmatic Rei Ayanami is hard to befriend. It's not that she isn't nice, or that she's rude, but rather the fact that she doesn't care to have friends. No one has ever gotten close enough to her to really know enough about her. She speaks only when necessary, and she never disobeys orders from anyone. Never.
Rei has very little interaction with other characters. The only person she seems to talk freely to is Gendo, who apparently took care of her as a young child. Shinji is often envious of their relationship, since Gendo seems hardly concerned about his own son, whereas the safety of Rei is quite important.
Although in the first half of the series Rei seems hardly approachable, more is revealed about her circumstances later in the series.
