Dragon Ball GT - The Perfect FAQ |
Great thanks to
Curtis Hoffman. This page was made by him. His site doesn't exist now, but he gave me
authorization to have this page in my site! |
Introduction
Dragon
Ball GT is the sequel to the Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z TV series. Basically,
when the manga ended, and subsequently the TV show, a number of people involved with
product tie-ins hated to see such a cash cow disappear so quickly. So, the sequel was
created, with Toriyama as artistic advisor, and the scriptwriters at Toei Studios as the
ones generating the actual story.
Many western DBZ fans hated the new show, partly because of the modified character
designs. However, the target audience is a younger group of Japanese kids, and they ate up
the show as expected. Since the writers wanted to return to the slapstick toilet humor
that helped make the original Dragon Ball so successful, the first few episodes of the new
series had little combat and more character development. Which of course did not make the
dissatisfied American fans any happier.
But, the core element of Dragon Ball is obviously one-on-one fighting. So, of
course, Gokuu, Trunks, and Pan run into increasingly strong enemies, and the combats take
longer and longer to resolve. Which naturally caught the attention of the hardcore DBZ
fans.
In fact, DBGT is a good series by itself. The Toei scriptwriters put a lot of
thought and planning into laying out the plotlines well in advance. And, Toriyama spent a
fair amount of time creating idea sketches to help flesh out the nature of the DBGT
universe, and the enemies that live in it.
In May of 1997, the Dragon Ball GT Perfect File book hit the shelves
in Japan. This book describes all of the characters, planning, and world elements in
detail, leading up to the beginning of the Super #17 story arc. It includes some
teasers for the Evil Dragons story arc that follows the defeat of Super #17.
The file that you are reading is dedicated to explaining the DBGT universe,
based on the information found in the Dragon Ball GT -- Perfect File book.

Notes
Concerning the Show Itself
- The opening credit sequences are
based on the image drawings that Akira Toriyama and the Toei Studio staff created to show
the animators what the DBGT universe should look and feel like. After the scriptwriters
wrote the first five episodes, the artists drew up the opening credits.
- The giant that Gokuu, Pan and Trunks
fight in the opening credits never appears anywhere else. It is unclear if it is a Machine
Mutant, or some other kind of creature.
- There is an "All Nude"
collection of drawings of Gokuu. They were created for the sequence where Gokuu turns
SSJ4.
- According to the encyclopedia section
at the end of the Perfect File, Toriyama had created a sketch that shows all of the
characters as they would look some years after the end of DBZ. All of the female
characters are now wearing more "delicate" hairstyles, and Goten apparently has
stopped letting his hair grow long. As stated in the encyclopedia, Toriyama himself had
decided to crop Vejiita's hair and give him a moustache, in an attempt to shock the Toei
Studio staff.
- The opening music is "Dan Dan
Kokoro Hikareteku", by Field of View, which is used from episode 1 on up.
- The closing credit sequences are
called "The Fighters' Day Off", and include some of the image drawings. After
episode 41, the closing credits change, to a "game of keep away with the Dragon
Balls", and include several stills from the manga volume covers. Around episode 53
(or maybe 51), the closing credits change to "Walking Gokuu".

Notes
Concerning the Dragon Balls (Ultimate and Normal)
- The Balls are called the
"Kyuukyoku Dragon Balls", or the "Ultimate Dragon Balls". They are
very powerful, because they were created by the Namek that arrived on Earth, prior to his
splitting to become Demon King Piccolo, and Kami-sama. The Ultimate Dragon Balls are a
little bigger than the normal ones, have black stars instead of red stars, and can only
grant one wish. When they fly apart, they scatter across the galaxy, and not just across
Earth.
- The Ultimate Shenlon is yellow, and
several 10's of times bigger than the normal Shenlon. There is a chance that the Ultimate
Shenlon could even resurrect the same dead person two times or more.
- But, the power released by the
appearance of Ultimate Shenlon is so great that it causes the Earth to self-destruct 1
year later. This is why the Ultimate Dragon Balls need to be gathered again -- to counter
this energy and prevent the Earth from exploding. Further, this is why Piccolo would
rather die, than remain alive and risk having the Ultimate Dragon Balls used a second
time.
- The normal Dragon Balls have always
been identified by the number of stars on them. But, with the start of the Evil Dragons
story line, we learn that each Ball has its own name (based loosely on either the Chinese
or Japanese counting system.)
- Ii-Shinchuu
- Ryan-Shinchuu
- San-Shinchuu
- Suu-Shinchuu
- Uu-Shinchuu
- Roh-Shinchuu
- Chii-Shinchuu

Notes
Concerning Saiya-jin
- Pan and Bra have Saiya-jin blood, but
they are the only Saiya-jin characters in the series that have not yet gone to Super
Saiya-jin level. However, they do have the potential to do so, and the book asks
"What form would they take if they went SSJ?"
- The Saiya-jin race does not have a
home planet of their own. Their history is unknown, prior to their arriving on Planet
Tsufuru. After taking over Planet Tsufuru, King Vejiita renamed it "Planet
Vejiita". Obviously, the Saiya-jin had to come from somewhere, but nothing is known
about their Mother Planet at this time.
- The "Legendary Super
Saiya-jin" was supposedly something that only came around once every 1000 years. But,
in the manga and TV series, Trunks, Gokuu, Gohan, Goten, and Vejiita can all go to Super
Saiya-jin 1. Gokuu and Gotenks (the Fusion of Goten and Trunks) have gone SSJ3. The
Perfect File authors (and V-Jump magazine) hint that because so many people have gone SSJ,
it can't be the TRUE "Super Saiya-jin" mode described in the legend. And
therefore, Brolii from the movies has no claim to the title of "THE Legendary Super
Saiya-jin". Instead, Gokuu's success at becoming the strongest Saiya-jin of all, with
the Super Gokuu 4 form, makes him arguably the TRUE "Legendary Super Saiya-jin."

Notes
Concerning Tsufuru-jin
- Baby is the culmination of Tsufuru
science. When the race was about to be killed off by King Vejiita's army, the King of the
Tsufuru took some of his genetic material and fired it into space. This material later
became known as "Baby".
- Somehow, Baby was able to create Dr.
Myuu (who is an android), and program him to develop Machine Mutant technology. Dr. Myuu
believes that he made Baby, but it is in fact the other way around. And, all of the other
Machine Mutants are Baby's underlings, created as part of his plan to regain his body, and
then take over the galaxy as revenge against the Saiya-jin.
- When Baby died in episode 40, there
were no more Tsufuru-jin in the universe.
- Planet Plant has a gravity ten times
heavier than Earth's. Because of this, the Tsufuru-jin do not grow very tall. Most of them
do not get much taller than Gokuu is as a child. (Note that when Baby had Shenlon create
planet Tsufuru, the gravity was kept at Earth-normal.)
- Note that in fact, New Plant is
actually called "planet Tsufuru." This can get pretty confusing, with a planet,
a race, and everything all given one name.
- When Baby took over Vejiita's body,
he became "the Emperor within the Emperor". Baby was part of the King of the
Tsufuru, and Vejiita is the last surviving member of the Saiya-jin royal lineage. So,
Vejiita-Baby was the ruler of BOTH the Tsufuru-jin and the Saiya-jin races.
- Anyone that is turned into a
Tsufuru-jin will become loyal to Baby only. If they meet an enemy of Baby's, their eyes
will turn red, their face looks evil, and they look like ruffians. Once controlled, the
ONLY way to return to normal is to be given the Chou-sui water. There is no other way to
turn a Tsufuru-jin back human later on.

About Specific Characters
- Baby
To turn into Super Baby 2, Baby took the energy from his Tsufuru-jin followers. At this
point, Super Baby 2 is physically becoming closer to his original form, and is dropping
Vejiita's features. Baby's ultimate attack is the Fire Revenge Death Ball. The Fire
Revenge Death Ball, and the ordinary Revenge Death Ball are both evil variations of
Gokuu's Genki Dama. In Ougon Oozaru form, Baby uses Super Gyarikku-hou, and Revenge
Death Ball Final. (Gyarikku sounds close to "garlic", but I haven't seen a
definition of this word yet.)
- Bra
Very little is written about Bra. The main point is that she is a very straight-forward
speaker, and is not afraid to say what she thinks.
- Evil Dragons
For a long time, the original Dragon Balls were used no more than once in a hundred years.
But, with the advent of Gokuu and friends, Shenlon has been summoned countless times over
the last 50 years. This has caused a build up of negative energy within the Dragon Balls.
Pretty soon, the Balls will crack open and release that energy. The negative energy will
then attract 7 evil Dragons from a neighboring galaxy. Each Dragon has a DB somewhere
within its body, and is named after their corresponding Dragon Ball's true name. That is, the Dragon with the #2 Ball is called
"Ryan-Shinlon."
- Gokuu
Gokuu is about age 50 at the start of DBGT. After he becomes a child again, he loses the
ability to teleport, but is still as good a fighter as before. The reason he can't stay at
SSJ3 for very long is that it takes a LOT of energy to maintain this level, and Gokuu's
smaller body has less energy now.
Gokuu's favorite pasttimes are eating, and getting stronger. In SSJ4 mode, he can
teleport, use Times-10 Kamehame-ha, and blind people with "Taiyo-ken" (Sun
Attack).
- Kaiou-bit
When Kaiou-shin and Kibit fused together, using the potara, I started calling them
"Kaiou-bit", in keeping with the pattern that Toriyama used in combining the
names of whoever it was that did the fusion (Vejit, Gotenks, etc.) But, the DBGT TV
series, and the Perfect File persist in calling him "Kaiou-shin".
- Kaiou-shin Kai
This is the planet where the old Kaiou-shin lives. It is unclear whether this is actually
a planet, an asteroid, or something else.
- Dr. Myuu
Dr. Myuu keeps talking about his plans to conquer the galaxy, or the universe. In
Japanese, this is "uchuu seifuku". Actually, Dr. Myuu is just an android that
had been created and programmed by Baby to develop Machine Mutant technology to give Baby
a stronger body.
- Pan
At the end of DBZ, Pan entered the Tenka-ichi Budoukai at age 3. At that time, she loved
sweet parfaits. She is currently age 9, and prefers to go to a cafe and drink black
coffee.
- The Parapara Brothers
These dancers are known as the "Weird Fighters".
- Rirudo and EC4
Shogun Rirudo is the strongest of all the mutants on M2. After him, the strongest is
Energy Cannon Sigma.
- Shuu and Mai
Mai is noted as having gone from being a beautiful woman to a feeble old hag. Shuu and Mai
are called "Pilaf's Lieutenants without an army."
- Suuguroku Kukan
The place where the Space Tanuki Suuguro and his son are found is indeed a purgatory. You
must win 540,000 consecutive games to be able to escape. If you lose, or are caught
cheating, you die.
- Super #17
This "ultimate" android can suck the energy from his enemies, just like #19 and
#20 could. Plus, he has an energy attack, called the "Flash Bomber", that is
like a machine gun firing blasts of energy balls at his enemies. When he under goes his
power-up, Super #17 can also create a black energy ball between his hands.
- Trunks
Trunks has his father's fighting sense, and his mother's clear thinking, which makes him
one of the elite super fighters. He is good with machinery, and becomes the GT team's main
pilot. Plus, he is the "Young President" of Capsule Corp. Because of his work,
Trunks has not been able to train as much as Gokuu or Vejiita, and is therefore not as
strong as them. In his business suit, Trunks attracts all of the office ladies, but he is
still not comfortable dealing with women that come on to him.
- Uubu
Gokuu has only had one student -- Uubu. At the beginning of DBGT, Uubu is still Gokuu's
student, but they only get together once a year to practice fighting each other.

Q&A
Section
Q: |
Why
was Gokuu turned into a child? |
A: |
The scriptwriters felt
that it would be too hard to do anything with the adult Gokuu after he defeated Majin Buu.
Further, the show has always revolved around Gokuu's growing stronger. So, the writers
decided to make him a child again, and take away his teleport ability. Even so, Gokuu is
still Gokuu, and as the fight with Baby shows, he is still very strong.
|
Q: |
What
does "GT" mean? |
A: |
Great Touring . and/or
Galaxy Touring - GT has both meanings.
In actuality, it was just the name for Toriyama's rough design work, and may have come
from the initials for Gokuu and Trunks. Incidentally, the other suggested titles were
"21", "Z 2", "WW (Wonder World)", and "G-Up
(Growing-Up)".
|
Q: |
Why
were Gokuu, Trunks, and Pan selected as the main members? |
A: |
Gokuu was a given. Pan
was the second choice because she's the granddaughter of Mr. Satan and Gokuu, and had
growth potential. The third person could have been anyone. Trunks was decided on to add
balance, and because he could operate the ship. He also has Vejiita's power and is Bulma's
child (giving him a clear head.)
|
Q: |
Why
is the character of the current Trunks different from that of little Trunks? |
A: |
Little Trunks was a
naughty child. The grown up Trunks is very serious. Why? The staff felt that Future Trunks
had a serious nature, so they decided that that's how Trunks would behave in this
timeline. That, and people change as they age. For the same reason, the staff decided that
Goten would become more impertinent as a young adult.
|
Q: |
Why
did Vejiita shave off his moustache? |
A: |
Vejiita was given the
moustache to make him look more sauve. The standard expectation is that many Japanese fans
complained about it in their letters to the studio. The truth is, Toriyama's daughter once
said that she thought Vejiita would look better without it. Eventually, the staff writers
heard about this comment, and thought "well, why not." The result was for Bra to
tell her father that the moustache did not suit him.
|
Q: |
Why
did the staff create SSJ4? |
A: |
(Roughly) To have
something more powerful than Baby, which was supposed to be more powerful than any
Saiya-jin or Tsufuru-jin. So, the staff said, "Let's do SSJ4!" Further, they
decided to tie this in to "the Legendary once in a thousand years Super
Saiya-jin" concept. Which led to Gokuu being given a red body instead of the normal
golden one.
|
Q: |
Why
was the galaxy chosen as the stage for this story? |
A: |
Gokuu is the ultimate
fighter! Therefore, there was no way to create a stronger enemy on Earth. Instead, the
staff worked on the concept of having Gokuu go into space. This gave them the additional
Tsufuru-jin angle, and the chance to create a new enemy -- Baby.
