NOTE : To see these movies you need the "DivX ;-)" codec. Don't worry, it is free and you can download this driver here. I suggest that you download the videos to your hard disk before paying them back with the media player. To do so right click on the picture and choose to "save link" (Netscape) or "save object with name" (Microsoft IE). The player to watch the movies is included in WIN98 and in BEoS, if you have a Mac O/S you can download a player from Microsoft. If you have Linux you know better than me what to do. Just like in Italy there are many channels here in Greece. They have three (four?) public televisions named ET1, ET2, ET3 (wich is here in Thessaloniki, next to the communication tower) and maybe also NET is public. Then there are also some good private channels like Star, Mega, Alpha and some other pirvate but not that brilliant channels like Alter, Ant1, Gnomi and a lot of local channels.
Publicity - Movies - Music - City - Clubbing Go to the Index - Go to the top A good starting point is publicity ;-) You get a lot of it! It looks like in Greece there is no rule about how much publicity they can fit between the two halves of a movie. As a matter of fact you get the first half of the movie from 21:00 till 22:00 then you get 15minutes of publicity, 30 minutes of News and another 15 of publicity... If you're lucky (and you didn't forget the fist part) the film is then resumed at 23:00 with the second part... Go to the Index - Go to the top How do you see movies in Greece? For instance in Roma (my city) there are some cinemas for foreigners where the movies are played in the original language (no dubbing) while Italian TV passes only dubbed movies. The good of making erasmus here is that they don't dub movies. You get the movies in original language with Greek subtitles. The quality of the movies is generally good on both Mega and Star while Alpha is famous for the sports, specially football. Don't expect anything from the public television. Altought the subtitles are a bit annoying they could help you to learn the language (but you have to learn reading Greek first!) Here is a short shot from
Hiraklis (Herkules). It is a American telefilm that
is currently shown on the STAR
channel. As you see the subtitles take the lower
quarter of the screen and the audio is English! Video Size 232Kb

Go to the Index - Go to the top How does Greek music looks like? To me it looks like Greek people really love their singers. There are a lot of Greek clips on TV, way more than I am used to see in Italy for Italian singers. Listen to more music in the appropriate section of the site. Go to the Index - Go to the top The city of Thessaloniki is the second city in Greece. With more than one million in habitants it is normal that some channel is dedicated exclusively to the regional affair of the city. Go to the Index - Go to the top Clubbing issues. As explained in the Nightlife section clubbing and pubbing are the most known way passing the night. While on winter and autumn the Pubs and Closed clubs get the people during summertime the population goes to beach clubs and open air discos. Luckily I have got videos of both ;-)
And for wintertime we have a
video from the Escape club in Athens. Actually this
is not far from the usual hi-end club of
Thessaloniki (and it is the only clip I have got,
so keep it)
