Letters to the Editors

Arthur Dent and Thomas Paine

Dear Editors,
As a product of the 60s whose watchword was "revolution," I have to respect a publication named The Subterranean. I don't necessarily agree with everything in it - but there aren't any publications that I do agree with absolutely. Most of the articles have been extremely well-written and thought-provoking. As for the vulgarity, my only objection is that the English language is so rich and varied, I feel four-letter words are often used when one is too lazy to look for a more appropriate word. (Not a judgment - I've been guilty of it myself)

As a student and as a parent of students, I, too, have been frustrated with teachers who rely on reading and writing assignments with very little classroom instruction. But casting blame is futile. As a student, you need to deal with it because in the "real world," more than likely, you will be working with, or for, someone who is just coasting. Personally, I need to take pride in what I do, but I've come in contact with many who try to do as little as possible for their paycheck, and they take pride in that. Having a poor teacher is no excuse for not trying to learn.

-Thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful and thought-provoking letter. We agree that having a poor teacher is no excuse for giving up on one's education, but we feel compelled to call attention to that which must be im-proved at Terra Nova, including the quality of teaching on the part of some of TN's staff. If everyone at TN took as much pride in their work as you do, we wouldn't have this problem.

Dear Editors,
I must give you the most extreme amounts of props because of the obvious amount of effort that must go into this.

There have been many articles denouncing teachers for their lack of teaching. While it is true that "we don't learn because they don't teach," there is another side to the matter: there are many students in this school that completely make teachers' lives miserable! True, it is also a matter of the teacher having ineffective discipline, but I feel horrible for some teachers who have given up because so many students don't give a flying fuck about education - and it is so frustrating for the few that are actually trying to learn! Hmmm....what would you kids rather do? Work a little in school and get a good job with MONEY, or live at home, getting arrested every week for being drunk in public for the rest of your miserable life?

-First, you're right: this is a shitload of work. We appreciate the props. Second, those morons who make teachers' lives suck should be removed from the school or at least beaten about the head and neck with a big trout for impeding our education.

Dear Editors,
-When this paper first came out, my first thought was "Oh God, another reject trying to stir up some shit," but after reading it, I have changed my opinion entirely. I was amazed that after the first edition, you stopped the personal attacks and began attacking the issues that concern us- the students, the faculty, and the whole school in general. I'm very happy to see that there are a few students that are making their voices heard and not trying to destroy people along the way. I also send my nomination to The Subterranean for Kudos of the Week.

-While it's not out of the realm of possibility (or even probability) that we should stir up some shit, thank you for noticing that it isn't our sole mission in life. The truth, however, is.

Dear Editors,
I totally enjoyed your election issue. Your story on the apathy of the younger generation's lack of voting was well done. I read with real interest your interviews with the city council candidates. But by far your best issue was this last, on depression. I'm sure it was a very hard topic to write about. But it's a topic that must be put out in the open where we can recognize and help those in need. As a parent, it was extremely difficult for me to read your sometimes graphic details, but it does no good to candy coat reality. I needed to see just how serious this problem is!!

As to the loser of the week column, I just hope someone who feels like they're living in the "tenth circle" doesn't come to find their name there. It may be more then they could handle.

-We share your concern regarding LotW, and we emphasize that we're making fun of actions, not people.
