WarEngine

WarEngine is the basic rule system in the Shock Force II game. It is customizable, with a nice system for making rules for any figure, and very simple to play, without being a "toy" system. The rules for cover encourage you to not run your troops right up in the open, and the force design system, while flexible, puts constraints to not overdo armies. We'll see whether my Space Marine army, with a trial rule to stretch the force construction, is overdone. :)

WarEngine is available in the form of Shock Force II. You can find out about it at xB9 Games.

Here is an army list for Space Marines using WarEngine. Note that this is my own version. They have a Star Wars AT-ST, and robots modelled by Knights from the epic line. A table version.

Here is one for the Dark Legion, though I am not following Warzone closely. And here is a table version.

I'm planning a battle of Marines vs the Dark Legion, with 2500 points of Force, 500 of Renown. Here is a 3000 point Space Marine army, and a 3001 point Dark Legion army. Note that these armies were designed before I updated the army lists above, so the abilities and point values are a bit off.

Here are some pictures of things the Dark Legion is using.
The Vulkan Crater Giant, really a Mighty Max toy, representing something called Magus.
A Razide. The point of this picture is to show how I got the gun connected--the model isn't made well, and I had to fill in between the wrists and the hands holding the gun.
This is a Doom Buggy, a toy I'm converting for use with Dark Legion.
Here is another one.
Here is a tank that I may use for the same thing. This comes from Dollar Tree, and is certainly affordable!

My son Nathaniel and my nephew Sean played a 1000 point game of Marines vs Dark Legion. At first I was worried about Nathaniel's experience with Massed Attacks being able to take out the marines. However, he used all his reserve fire on a vehicle he didn't have much chance of hitting, and then was mopped up. Nathaniel is on the left, Sean on the right in this picture.

Here are some lists I did for Shock Force, a previous version of the rules.
The Space Marines are designed for the plastic Space Marines from the W40K box, plus Terminators from Space Hulk.
The Robots are Games Workshop's Knights for the Epic scale.
The Mutants are the plastic Dark Legion from the Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel board game.

I've painted up an army of Frogs (from Lance & Laser for Critter Commandos--I used the plastics from Fortress Figures) for use in Shock Force. Take a look at my pictures!
