Miniatures Games
Miniatures games are (usually) war games, played with plastic or metal figures representing individual (or groups of) soldiers or vehicles. Instead of a board, these games are played on a table with various kinds of terrain set up, representing hills, forests, buildings, etc.
These games can have different themes. Some are based on historical wars of different periods, from ancient to modern. Some are fantasy, similar to ancient battles, but with magic or monsters in the ranks. Some are science fiction, where guns are replaced with lasers and tanks might fly rather than drive on treads.
Terrain
One of the things that makes miniatures games fun is the terrain on which the battle is played.
One of my favorites is
Epic 40,000, by Games Workshop. This represents battles involving many troops and vehicles in the far future. This page has some info and pictures of some of my miniatures.
Another one I'm starting to play is
Stargrunt II, by Ground Zero Games. This game represents smaller battles, involving squads instead of companies or individuals. Though there may be tanks in the game, there will not be the swarms of vehicles used in Epic 40,000. This game also takes a different approach, and the emphases of SGII are leadership, troop quality, and morale.
Blood Bowl
This is _real_ fantasy football. :)
Here's a page on the WarEngine, the rules system for Shock Force II.
Here is a page about my
Paper Miniatures
set. These are PostScript pictures that may be cut out and folded together to produce miniature tanks and such. A good, cheap, starter set!
