Me

Well, what is there to say? That's a relatively recent photo of me.

I'm the owner and servant of this rapaciously time consuming web page.

I'm also a throroughly expatriate New Zealander, having lived 8 years in the United States (first in San Francisco, then in Washington DC) and am now domiciled in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Lemmesee... I'm 40, a scientist and... is anybody reading this?

Don't you have ANYTHING better to do with your time? Geez!

Site(s) Index

Here, for those too impatient to follow the links around the long way is an index for Mark's Astounding CyberEmpire O'Doom! with an annotated description of what's where. It doesn't cover everything by a long shot, but it will lead you to the starting pages for most of what's available.

LINKS

This is exactly what it sounds like - a small collection of links to sites I visit frequently, covering

  • Anime stuff - a few links to major indexes
  • Bryce and Poser - a list of tutorials, great sites and places to download models
  • Comix (including Manga) - both online and links to companies that sell the paper kind
  • Search Directories - InfoSeek, Yahoo, etc. ,etc.
  • Friends of Mark - my friend's home pages
  • Food and Drink - links to recipe pages restaurant reviews and so on.
  • Gaming stuff - both roleplaying and tabletop (mostly DBM and variants)
  • Apple and Macintosh computer-related stuff - icons, shareware, news, etc.
  • Movies - what's on, where, reviews, etc.
  • News - online newspapers and new services
  • New Zealand links - information, airline schedules and news
  • Science stuff - related to tuberculosis and Immunology - my work areas
  • Travel stuff - online booking services, timetables, etc.

3D Graphics

This a collection of pages that mostly exist to showcase my 3-D rendered art. I mostly use Bryce, Poser and Ray Dream studio by Metacreations, with occasional forays into Stratavision when I need my blood pressure raising.

  • Old Favourites - pictures of mine that have been selected for display on other people's sites
  • Galleries - Mostly Fantasy images - castles, dragons, wizards, etc.
  • Links - a list of tutorials, great sites and places to download models

GAMING

OK- this is actually the main reason for this site's existence. I put it together to provide a resource for players in a game I ran. It's gotten way, way out of hand since then.

  • Links to Hero system resources - mostly jumping off points with good collections of HSR related material.
  • House rules for Hero system - these are my house rules. They involve fairly minimal changes, but plug some big-ass ol' holes in the existing rules. They also include easy rules to speed combat up big time, expanded skills rules, plus some discussion of how and why.
  • New rules for Martial arts - a much more balanced and flexible system to replace or augment the one from the HSR.
  • Character Archive - character sheets and character art for original Hero System characters from roleplaying games I've been in or run
  • Random Fantasy Hero Character generator - a series of tables for generating random characters within predefined points limits and general classes - magic-users, priests, warriors, merchants and rogues. Actually gives pretty good results.
  • The Ultimate Grimoire - an enormous and fully indexed collection of pregenerated spells for use with Hero system games.
    • Also magic items of all kinds, plus advice on generating magic-using characters, designing original magic systems and GM'ing games where magic is involved, plus rules for D&D style magic, medieval magic, Voodoo, Lovecraftian magic, Feng Shui, etc. etc.
  • Occasional Action Theatre! Individual adventures suitable for an evening's entertainment with a strong bias towards Hong Kong Action
    • Adventures come with maps, cut-out counters and character and NPC sheets with plenty of new art.
  • Battlefleet Gothic. Battle reports and ongoing campaign based on starfleet combat in the WH40K universe
  • Gothick Empires. This is a Fantasy Hero game world based on my (very) long-running game. It' still growing, but right now contains:
  • Sengoku - a fantasy Hero game world set in Medieval Japan in the era of the Sengoku Jiddai. This contains:

What's New for 2002 and 2003

It's here at last! The last episode of the famous Sengoku campaign, with swarms of new NPCs and the final slugfest-filled climax!! Thanks to all the GMs who have written so much nice mail about this game - and who generate so much bandwidth, Geocities keeps taking me off-line :-). (If that ain't praise, I don't know what is!) This is it for Medieval Japan (at least for a while....) as I want to start a new game in a modern setting. More on that when it's ready. There is, as usual, some new artwork as well, in the art gallery too.

To celebrate 500 downloads of the Sengoku Campaign, I have a little present to make life easier for Sengoku GMs - all the NPCs and all the adventures have been formatted into two word files complete with Tables of Contents. There are also a couple of nifty colour covers, so you can print them out and get them bound. It will make running the adventures easier, you can trust me on this! Also Scott Sprague has adapted most of the NPCs to the Usagi Yojimbo game system so GMs who are using the UY system to run Sengoku can download his character adaptions.

Finally, there is a huge swag of new art in the Art Gallery - some of which is pretty cool if I do say so myself.

Blah. Geocities no longer has enough space to host the books. I had to create a new home for them at Angelfire. So.... the NPCs and adventures live there now - but are still linked off the GM's adventure pages. Sorry about that.

09/01/03

The Grimoire has been fully updated to 5th Ed. rules and a book version, in MS word format, with index, table of contents and colour cover has been made available.

There's more art in the Art Gallery, including some new, award-winning pictures.

This page was getting too large to load fast, so I have moved the old What's new prior to 1999 to a seperate page and the what's new for 200 and 2001 to another page.
