Catwoman was a moderately successful burglar who got caught trying to break into a museum by a another burglar. This incident led her to the dojo of a martial arts master who taught her everything he could. She proved an apt student. Later, near penniless, she set herself up, temporarily, as a prostitute, waiting for something better to come along. The first thing that did was Bruce Wayne, who trounced her far too easily for her liking. She looked for a new teacher, managing to find Ted Grant, who furthered her education. Then came the Batman. He inspired Selina to don a similar costume and take-up her life of crime again. While not on the side of angels, she is a compassionate woman and has often risked her life to do the right thing. She and Batman have had brief flings but their independence and different values have always forced them apart.
