The worlds ultimate newspaper in spite of the 1850's Gothic type font. Sad to say about one-third of their writers refer to NYC's northern borough as THE Bronx. Of course one correctly says Bronx. |
Heres a shameless NY Times wannabe ripping off their type font. Sorry guys, a boondocks rag just can't pull it off! Ya gotta be in the Apple to make it work! Fuhgeddaboudit! |

Oy, vay! The place is crawling with wannabes! |

Yet another poseur! This one from the Windy City! |

A statue by Saint-Gaudens of Peter Cooper in Cooper Square, NYC. His most productive years were as a New Yorker. He was friends with Sanford White, Charles McKim, and H. H. Richardson. |
 |
The ultimate symbol of NYC, the Empire State Building. Here is a shot of the lobby wall. |
 |
Heres a shot of the tower. The ESB, the Chrysler Building, and Rockerfeller Center are considered the finest examples of the Art-Deco style. |
The Empire State Building, taken from their official web page. Note that it is the only tall building seen, so this shot is probably from the 1930's. This is one of a few notable US buildings that have their own ZIP code. The ESB's is 10118. |
 |
 |
This is a newer photo. It looks like they repainted it, but this is a newer type of film, which captures the true color better.
Trivia answer - this is the object the Empire State Building's shape is supposed to evoke. question |

 |
This is the Chrysler Building. It's sort of an ESB wannabe. However when ZIP codes were assigned it had more pull. It received the unique ZIP code 10174! |
The World Trade Center. Most people don't know that NYC is the financial capitol of the world due to the work of one man. Alexander MacDougal, Washingtons right hand man. He was the driving force behind the founding of the Bank of New York in 1784. By the time Philadelphia had the first non-NYC bank, NYC had six! The Twin Towers share the unique ZIP code 10048. |
 |
 |
The logo of The Bank of New York. Even they get it wrong! On their site they say Alexander Hamilton founded the bank. Wrong! He was not even an original board member but MacDougal was chairman of the board.
Trivia answer - this is the correct name of the Borough of Manhattan. question

Rockerfeller Center.

Here is a picture of the RCA Building, the central structure in the complex. It is 850 feet or 70 stories high. This building is not on Fifth Avenue, but on a privately owned street. Its official address is Thirty Rockerfeller Plaza, and it has unique ZIP Code 10103. It was renamed the GE Building in 1989 when General Electric bought out RCA.
|
 |
Here is a view of Rockerfeller Center with the famed statue of Atlas holding up the Earth by Lee Lawrie. When I was in college, for one summer I worked here at my fathers railroad. The office was in the mezzanine. The address is 630 Fifth Av. This building, The International Building, also has a unique ZIP code, 10111. |
This is the statue of Prometheus by Paul Manship. It is in the world famous ice skating rink at Rockerfeller Center. This statue is coated with pure gold leaf. Since gold is plated very thinly,it took less than an ounce of gold! At 5000 dols an ounce you would take a big loss recovering this gold! |
 |
 |
Here is a view of Saint Patricks Cathedral. It is directly across from Rockerfeller Center. Its main door faces Atlas holding up the Earth. |
NYC also has over a hundred first class museums. Here is a shot of the Museum of Modern Art. |
 |
 |
Heres a shot of Grand Central Terminal. There are a lot of people who think the GCT is the ultimate symbol of NYC. I prefer the ESB.
Being an outstanding example of Beaux Arts design, the GCT has unique ZIP code 10165. The building in the back is the former Pan Am Building, now known as the Met Life Building. |

This is the famous clock in the Main Concourse. They estimate that over two hundred million people have said - let's meet at the GCT clock... |
Inside the GCT is Vanderbilt Hall which offers 12,000 square feet of unique space with Tennessee Pink
marble floors below and gold chandeliers above. It is classic Beaux Arts architecture
at its finest. Here is a shot of one of the four Vanderbilt Hall chandeliers. |
 |
 |
Heres a shot of the Main Concourse. It was completely restored recently. The Terminal was designed by Whitney
Warren and built by his firm, Warren and Wetmore. Ironically on his staff was a junior architect, Cass Gilbert. He went on to become the high priest of the Beaux-Arts style. |
Here is a, um, er house by Gilbert. It has 26,600 sq ft, a 2000 sq ft ballroom and two elevators. Built in 1896 for the son of the founder of W & J Sloane it is 59 ft wide and 102 ft deep. If you're interested the exclusive broker is the Corcoran Group. They are asking 25 million for it. Better hurry, Lisbet Johnson, granddaughter of the founder of Johnson & Johnson is interested too! |
 |
 |
This is what started it all. Cass Gilbert was a mid-west country architect when his Battle Hall in Austin was named new building of the year. F. W. Woolworth learned of this, and was so impressed that he commissioned Gilbert to create his Woolworth Building. Here is a shot of the tower. Some people call this style Neo-Gothic. |

Heres a shot of the Pierre Hotel. The body of water, in the south-east corner of Central Park, is rather unimaginatively named - The Pond. Mobil Oil rates hotels and the highest rank is five stars. The Pierre, The Trump International Hotel and the Saint Regis are the only five star hotels in New York City. Rooms start at 625 dols per night!
Trivia answer - this is what the Dutch called their colony just before it was finally taken over by Charles II. question

The Bethesda Terrace is one of Central Park's busiest tourist attractions.

major projects designed by a woman.
The Terrace is known as the 'Heart of the Park'.

This memorial to Ulysses S. Grant, on Riverside Drive, includes the tomb of General
Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant. Grant's tenacity and boldness led ultimately to Robert E. Lee's
surrender at Appomattox, scenes depicted by mosaics in the
tomb. In 1866 Congress awarded Grant his fourth star
making him the first full General of the Armies.
Designed by architect John Duncan, the
granite and marble structure was completed in 1897 and
remains the largest mausoleum in North America.

This is a view of the front of the library. The lions can be seen almost at the curb. One is just above the leftmost New York Times newspaper dispenser. The street in the foreground is the world's ultimate thoroughfare, legendary Fifth Avenue. |

Here is a shot of the stage. The success of Walt Disney is mainly due to a forgotten RCMH manager. He took ads in Variety promising to exclusively show, Snow White, just as the banks were threatening to pull the plug due to many cost overruns. The banks came up with one more loan, and of course it was a monster hit. Walt was on his way! |

Donald Trumps new hotel The Taj Mahal tastefully moved to Central Park.
The Taj Mahal is considered one of the most beautiful
buildings in the world and the finest example of the late
style of Indian Islamic architecture. The Mughal
emperor Shah Jahan ordered it built after the death
(1629) of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Not clear why The Donald named his casino after it. Like most people, he probably doesn't know its a tomb! Very clever, a tomb for people's money!
