In this scene, Tom hit Myrtle in the nose after she refused to cease repeating Daisy’s name. He then left to cleaning work to the women around him. It is an example of Tom letting someone else do his dirty work and clean up after him. It is a sign in his character that he lacks responsibility and/or remorse. Perhaps this has something to do with his childhood. If he were the youngest of a large family, there would have always been people to clean up after him. |
