Tom is explaining to Nick why he feels that it was okay
for Wilson to murder Gatsby. Tom
didn’t want any blood on his hands, so he told a provoked and
emotionally strained man who had just lost his wife in a brutal accident
the owner of the car that killed her.
Now who in Wilson's position wouldn't have done just what he did?
(Well, I'm sure that there are those who are sound enough of mind not
to, but I think I'm with Wilson on this one.) What one can also see from this excerpt is that Tom must not have
known who was really driving Gatsby’s car at that given time.
Not only can one see that Tom wanted someone else to do his work,
but that Daisy didn’t feel it necessary to tell Tom the true story
about what happened. |
