  • One of the most commonly asked questions when I tell people I'm a professional webmaster is, "Why bothering to learn the script?" There are programs to make it for you and its so easy. How hard could it be to maintain a site.

At first I thought the same thing. Boy was I wrong. Being a webmaster is hard work. I used to consider myself a pretty good one. I had time back then. Not anymore do I have that endless time. Go figure, social lifes ^_^

In any case, the first question is how does one first create a webpage. Few of us have time to learn the language by reading the pages upon pages of script within one of these "Easy to Learn" manuals. God forbid, I never did something like that. That brings almost everyone to either hiring someone or using a program to create it.

I've never used Microsoft Frontpage. It doesn't appeal to me in the least. I don't like the company and I never wanted to shell out big bucks for some corporate stock program. From what I hear, its pretty good at teaching you HTML. What I can tell you is that the best way to learn is from pages with a WYSIWYG *pronounced Wizzywig* editor.

Now your question becomes, WHAT THE %$#&*#$ $#&*$#&^^ #~*#$^!*$!#! is that?!?!? WYSIWYG stands for "What you see is what you get!" In general, these types of browsers have little icons that can help you start a fledling page. You can learn to put up links, graphics, and other such stuff. In the end though, its up to you to make everything work.

One key think is realizing how the code is affected by everything you do. You should see what a tag looks like for a link, or for a graphic. You need to know what the tags are and what they do. You also need to know attributes of certain tags. Without these, your page will be nothing.

Using site managers is not all terrible though after learning basic HTML. For one thing, tables are a hell of alot easier to use in such a format. To think how hard some coding is when you just have odd little two letter tags in brackets.

If I could make a recommendation, HotMetal and Homesite, the second of which is a professional package I feel privledged to be familiar with, are amazingly easy to learn on. When I applied myself, I became a wizard in no time.

Don't be afraid of site utilities. Some have options that are invaluable in saving time and teaching. Despite what we "HTML gurus" say, its not terrible to use such things. Even the best use 'em. Just don't let it dominate the page. There is a time and a place where you'll have to learn the code and its better not to be to confused when that time comes.
