32 young women get the chance of a lifetime when they are chosen from thousands of applicants to come to LA to try and become America's Next Top Model. The journey starts at the Los Angeles International Airport, where girls arrive from destinations such as Arkansas, Florida, South Dakota and Louisiana. The competition begins even as the girls emerge from the airport. Danielle, the 20-year-old babysitter from Little Rock, Arkansas, states flat out, "I need to get in that house, and I'm not going to rest, not going to stop till I do that."

CONTROVERSY
Once everyone arrives, the girls pile into vans to head to their first destination. Dani, a 20-year-old from Texas, starts the conversation off on the wrong foot in one group. A rather vocal conservative, she reveals her un-PC opinions in a van filled with girls of color, including Gina, the 21-year-old translator from Tampa, Florida, and Furonda, the 24-year-old student from Stuttgart, Arkansas. However, the girls' focus changes when they arrive at a massive hotel in Pasadena, where the emotions range from excitement to shock to anxiety. All of those feelings soon transform into joy when Jay Manuel and J. Alexander emerge to greet everyone by rolling out a red carpet and kicking off the first challenge. All 32 girls will have three minutes to put together an outfit that mimics one of three walks from Tyra's runway history: sultry and seductive, sophisticated, or young and upbeat. When Jay yells go, Kathy, the 20-year-old house painter from Brevard, North Carolina, wastes no time and rips off her skirt, but Jay puts a stop to that and quickly sends her inside where there is more privacy.

Jade, the 26-year-old restaurant hostess from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, goes first with her sexy walk, and she's followed by many girls also trying to emulate Tyra's seductive attitude. A few take on sophisticated, and fewer still try the perky, upbeat look, but of all the girls, there's one standout: Dr. Yvonne, a 27-year-old ER doc from Surfside, Florida. Joanie, the 24-year-old sales associate from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, feels the sting of the loss even this early in the competition.

SURPRISE
The next day, Jay and J. meet up with the girls at breakfast to give them a taped message from Tyra, who can't make it to see them in person. The girls are crestfallen, but they listen intently, only to be surprised a few moments later when Tyra emerges from hiding to welcome everyone. There's a collective ear-splitting scream as the 32 wannabes stand in unison and rush forward to hug their idol.

With that, the first round of auditions begins with Sara, the 22-year-old student from Davis, California, who was approached in a mall to try out for the show. She'd been curious about modeling in the past, but spent her time in school involved in athletics. Her height could be a problem at 6'1", since most models are typically 5'9" to 5'11", but as Tyra points out, there are always exceptions. Furonda is next, and she's from the boondocks of Arkansas. Tyra asks her to demonstrate skills she'd learned in her former job as a phone sex operator, and she cracks the judges up with her many personas. Kari, the 18-year-old student from Brookings, South Dakota, follows, and with her doll's face and curvy body, she's focused mostly on being a Victoria's Secret model. Yvonne gives her best runway walk for Tyra and, although she's an ER doctor, her desire to model is another facet of her personality. Wendy, the 22-year-old retail assistant manager from New Orleans, Louisiana, was an evacuee during Katrina. She reveals to Tyra that she hasn't been able to find her dad since the storm. Somehow she puts her pain aside to demonstrate her walk.

AFTERNOON BECOMES ECLECTIC
Jade follows with a whole new energy--she's got confidence coming out of every pore. Tyra gets a kick out of her attitude; Tyra expected "she'd be like, 'My sister, we are all beautiful,' but [instead] she's like, 'Screw this, I'm fine.'" Gina has a tough time in her interview, mainly because she gets confused and contradicts herself. At first she feels that she wants to represent Asians because there aren't enough working Asian models, then says that she doesn't want to date an Asian man because they're so much shorter than she is. Tanika is next, and while at first Tyra is interested in hearing about her childhood as the only mixed-race girl in her neighborhood, Tanika shoots herself in the foot but stating that black women's hair isn't as good as her own. Andrea, a 19-year-old farmer's daughter from Geneva, Ohio, is sure she'll have a tough time if she makes it, since she's extremely close to her parents and this is the first time she's been away from home. There is a succession of, shall we say, eclectic personalities that follow, ending with Joanie, a rebellious preacher's daughter. She's tried amateur nights at strip clubs, and has worked as a cage dancer in the past to flout her upbringing. Leslie, the 18-year-old student from Higley, Arizona, is another wild one, who wears a replica of a tattoo Angelina Jolie has. She makes Miss J's (and everyone else's) day by referring to him as a woman. Next is Danielle, who is absolutely certain that she is going to make it. Her backstory brings tears to her eyes when she describes having to take care of her mother, who has rheumatoid arthritis. Her mom is her rock and her strength.

At dinner that night, Dani makes more inflammatory comments at the table. Danielle takes notice and calls her on it. Many of the girls feel Dani is racist, but Dani is unapologetic about her views. Danielle is certain that it's "going to be a long road if she's in this house with me."

A LITTLE OFF?
The next day, southern girl Kathy is up first, and she's never experienced the rest of the world (this was her first trip on a plane). Though she comes off a little "out there," Tyra sees her as model pretty and "a little off." Nnenna, the 22-year-old chemist from Houston, Texas, explains that while she's an American citizen, her accent comes from spending 12 years of her childhood in Nigeria. Her story is a tragic one--her mother died after giving birth to a fifth child in a last attempt to have a boy, and since her father couldn't take care of five girls, he sent Nnenna and her sister to Texas to live with her aunt. Tyra's a fan of both Nnenna's regal bearing and her fantastic body. Mollie Sue, the 25-year-old waitress from Tampa, Florida, had a boyfriend who controlled her life for nine years. Since he thought modeling was shallow, she never made an attempt, but those days are over now. Shkita, a 24-year-old from Watts, California, wants to be the next black Barbie, while Brooke, the 21-year-old student from Corpus Christi, Texas, is more of a hippie chick who doesn't wear makeup or brush her hair. Dani is next, and Tyra asks about her controversial views regarding both race and homosexuality. Tyra tries to explain that the fashion industry embraces everything she's against, and Jay is disappointed that her personality isn't as interesting as her body.

Tonight, the group will be narrowed down to 20, and in a room down the hall, there are 20 makeup stations containing one photo each. Those are the girls who are staying; the rest will have to head home. With that, the mad rush begins, and the girls race into the room to look for their headshots. The girls who find their photos are overjoyed, while others are devastated to have been eliminated. The competition is heightened by another photo shoot. The remaining girls will have 10 minutes to do their makeup for a beauty shot, in which their features must stand out naturally. They'll have no direction from the photographer, and only 10 frames to nail their photo. The girls get started, and everyone stands around watching as each competitor takes a turn. Nnenna thinks Dani is pretty, but doesn't think she looks like a model. She doesn't expect her to make the next cut. Furonda is anxious about the next elimination, and Andrea is more concerned about being away from home than anything else.

NARROWING THE FIELD
Evaluations of the contact sheets begin with Andrea, and while she looks incredible, Tyra is concerned she may have an eating disorder. Miss J. loves Sara and feels that with a little guidance she'll have better luck in her poses. Nnenna's look is what the industry loves, and Joanie shocks Tyra with her stunning model poses. Tyra also thinks Danielle has a little Beverly Johnson thing going on, while Mollie has potential though she comes off as robotic. Jay and J. think Kari could be a commercial model for sure, while Tanika needs a makeover to advance in the industry. Dani's shot is seen as a graduation photo, and Jay thinks she'll fit right in with the local PTA someday. Brooke has a look that the public might not appreciate, but she's perfect for the fashion industry, and Leslie is appealing (though she needs help with her walk). Jade's attitude grates on Tyra, but Jay thinks she turns out great photos. The camera loves Furonda and Gina has great bone structure, but Yvonne just doesn't translate in photos. Wendy's eyes are stunning, and Kathy's just got a look that appeals to the judges.

THE FINAL THIRTEEN
The final decision is made. Everyone is called in before Tyra, and tensions run high as they all wait to hear the results. The first name Tyra calls is Jade, followed by Sara, Mollie Sue, Leslie, Joanie, Nnenna, Kari, Brooke, Danielle and Kathy. With only three names left, Furonda, Gina and Wendy are called, and Tyra assures Wendy that she's got a great personality and a lot of potential; "there's no pity party going on here." The seven remaining girls are tearful, but Tyra assures them they should keep trying no matter what anyone says. Andrea had a tough week missing her family, while Dani is ready to go back to her cheerleading life in Texas.

Meanwhile, the lucky 13 are stunned by their success. Wendy is ready to get her life back on track, and Furonda and Jade are both psyched to get the competition started. Excitement is in the air, and the real competition is about to begin. 13 girls: one winner. Who will be America's Next Top Model?
