Despite having a runway training session taught by Miss J., most of the girls don't improve. There's more tripping and stumbling this week than in the entire history of ANTM. A difficult photo challenge involving deliberate falls results in beautiful photos for some of the girls, but Kari and Gina are not so lucky. Although Gina's not putting her best foot forward lately, Kari is sent home because neither her walk nor her photo is enough to keep her in the competition.
GIMME SOME SPACE, GIRL
Following Wendy's elimination, everyone decompresses back at the house. Most of the girls assumed Jade would end up in the bottom two, and Jade admits she was extremely nervous when Tyra called her forward. Having been on the edge of elimination, Jade is determined to step up her game. Elsewhere in the house, Gina looks to Danielle for advice. While Danielle is willing to help, she also needs her own space. Gina doesn't realize that she's a little too close for comfort and continues to trail Danielle around the house. Danielle is not pleased.
Tyra Mail arrives, reading, "Caution, trains may collide. Who will have the leg up?" Everyone immediately knows something regarding the runway is up next, and Mollie Sue wants to use the upcoming opportunity to prove herself. The next day, the girls arrive at a studio for Miss J.'s runway walk training session. "You need to be able to slinky-ink down the runway," stresses Miss J. "If you can't slinky-ink, you may look stinky-stink." As the session begins, the litany for the day is strong, strong, strong, but none of the girls is able to make much of an impression on their first attempt. Then they take on another challenge by wearing some complicated gowns--some poofy and wide, others too long. A few of the girls stumble, like Kari, who trips on her first and second tries, and Danielle, who comes a scant few inches from taking a serious tumble off the runway. In the end, Miss J. states, "We have some serious work to do…. You will be judged on this, and it may happen sooner than you think."
THE FREAKOUT AWARD GOES TO...
Back at the house that night, Danielle takes her blunders hard. As she, Joanie and Kari chat about missing family, Danielle talks about how her mother is her greatest inspiration. Later, Kari phones her parents, shedding a few tears as she confesses how hard it is to be without the presence and support of her family.
Later, a second Tyra Mail arrives. At first, the girls jump the gun and illogically translate the meaning of the words "Gromphadorina Portentosa" into a trip to Spain, but that illusion doesn't last long. Eventually, Furonda wonders if the words really mean "fat a**." The alarm clocks ring bright and early the next day and the girls head out to Smashbox Studios to meet with designer Jared Gold. They'll be walking the runway in his latest collection, Glinka. Jared describes it succinctly as "psychedelic, babushka, acid-witch and very, very dark." He's got a team of fashion advisers to help him with the judging, and the girls have only an hour and a half to prepare.
Black eyes, rosy cheeks and red lips adorn all the girls, and some of them are unnerved by their new looks. However, that's nothing compared to their runway accessories: giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Jade is excited to prove herself with the challenge, while Gina has a massive freak out over working with bugs. The runway show begins with Danielle, who looks great, but Furonda's eccentric arm movements weird out Jared. Brooke is too quick, while Sara lacks intensity. An inexperienced Kari is nervous before she gets started, and she doesn't make much of an impression. Jade stands out when she struts holding the roach, even going so far as to kiss it at the end of the runway. The advisers and Jared are psyched at her vibe, and Jade's confidence returns. Meanwhile, Gina has a meltdown when they place the roach on her--she actually screams in horror. Jared ends up shoving her onto the catwalk, and she's so distracted that she trips. Joanie, who rocked her walk, later states, "The freakout award goes to Gina."
VIPS
When the runway show is complete, Jared gives his evaluations. Danielle walks like a goddess, Mollie Sue walks like she's in the Gestapo, and Leslie walks with her nose leading the way. Kari wasn't able to make much of a statement, while Jade's confidence allowed her to give a strong performance. Joanie had great poses, Furonda's weird positioning was way off, Brooke was too slow, Nnenna too swishy, and Sara too uncertain about her height to excel. Gina gets the worst marks, and Jared has nothing positive to say about her performance. In the end, Jade is declared the winner, much to Gina's consternation. Jade gets to choose four friends to accompany her to a show at LA's Fashion Week and picks Nnenna, Danielle, Mollie Sue and Leslie. Fern Mallis greets the VIPs outside the tent and leads them to the front row of the Sheri Bodell show. It gives Jade some inspiration to see the thrilling performance--she wants to walk in the show herself.
That night, Jade calls home, proud that she's redeemed herself. She explains to her dad that her confidence has been confused with arrogance. Elsewhere, Gina is depressed about her performance. She realizes that she's got to develop a thicker skin.
FALLING ON THEIR FAIRY TAILS
The next day, the girls arrive at a studio for their next photo challenge, where Jay Manuel explains that learning how to fall gracefully is an important part of modeling. On the runway, accidents happen, but they've got to look pretty while taking a spill. Photographer Tracy Bayne will be shooting the girls as they fall sideways off a platform, all the while dressed in the finest of fairy tale couture. Furonda will be dressed as Rapunzel, Leslie is the Big Bad Wolf, Jade is Little Red Riding Hood, Mollie Sue is Little Boy Blue, Danielle is Snow White, Gina is Sleeping Beauty, Brooke will be the Emperor (with a few clothes), Kari is Goldilocks, Nnenna will be the princess who kisses a frog, Joanie gets to be Cinderella and Sara will be Gretel of Hansel and Gretel.
First up is Jade, and her winning streak continues with another slam dunk. Joanie also does well, swooning gracefully, while Jay calls out Furonda for "clunking down on the mat" each time she falls. Sara needs some time to let go of her blow up doll expression, perhaps because, as the tallest model, she's got the farthest to fall. Kari knows she's got to make a good impression with her photo and, though Mollie Sue feels the same, Jay doesn't recognize it. He thinks she's not giving her all and encourages her to come out of her shell. Away from Jay, Mollie Sue breaks down in tears, disappointed that her efforts are going unrecognized. Brooke and Leslie both perform strongly, and though Nnenna gets bad marks at the beginning, she lets loose and does well in the end. Danielle excels in her Snow White, or as she calls herself, Snow Black, character, and Jay reveals to her that he did not see her as a strong performer in the beginning. On her attempt, Gina "[gets] technical again," in Jay's words, and over thinks every shot. She's also distracted by Jade's expressions as Jade watches from the sidelines.
Tyra Mail greets the girls when they arrive home, announcing the next elimination. Mollie is concerned, while Kari feels her strong performance secures her position. She also thinks Gina should be next because she's just not a strong contender.
THE MOST STRESSFUL CHALLENGE OF ALL TIME
The time arrives for the next panel. Tyra presents the judges, including guest judge Jared Gold. The girls' task for the day: to show off what they've learned about walking the runway. However, there's a hitch. They won't be wearing basic heels--instead, they're donning some seriously tall platforms as they strut their stuff. Unfortunately for Kari, her walk has not improved, and she takes a number of falls on her walk (as both Tyra and Twiggy cringe). Sara and Brooke are both flawless, and though Jade bobbles, she maintains her cool until the end. Leslie trips up a bit, as do Nnenna and Mollie Sue. Gina manages to hold her walk together, but Joanie kicks butt and gets a "Yeah" from Tyra. Danielle's not so lucky--she takes a few spills and, as she exits, turns her ankles and twists her pinky toe. The doctor assures her that it's probably just a sprain. Back at panel, the judges are relieved to have the most nerve-wracking challenge of all time over and done with.
The girls file back in for evaluations with Danielle on crutches. Despite her injury, the judges are pleased to see her on her feet. First up is Jade, and the judges are happy with all aspects of her performance for the week, including her photo. Sara follows and, while her walk was strong, her photo close up isn't so great. Nnenna's walk was so-so, as was her close up, but her wide-angle is very graceful to Twiggy. Miss J. calls Leslie's walk buffalo-esque, but her sexy photo is given a high grade. As Danielle approaches, Nigel comments, "Falling is definitely your expertise." During her walk for the panel, she was able to smile even when she fell, and in her photo both her face and body position are incredible. Brooke does well enough in both walk and photo, though her jaw position remains an issue. Gina takes criticism from every corner, especially from Jared regarding her cockroach runway walk. As Kari steps forward, she tears up, disappointed that she stumbled so dramatically, but the judges are generous with their criticism regarding her photo. Nigel gently tells her that it would be good for her to tone up a bit and Tyra explains that will help give some angles to her face. Joanie gets great feedback for her strut, and her Cinderella photo goes over well, too. Mollie Sue's tippy-toe exit cracked Miss J. up after her walk, while her photo is disappointing to Nigel. He's looking for some life in the eyes, while Tyra recognizes that all of Mollie's tension is revealed in her nose.
GINA SURVIVES
With that, deliberations begin. Mollie is still flat, but Twiggy likes her androgynous look. She also picks Jade's picture as the best of the week. All the judges are impressed by Danielle, both for her gorgeous pic and her ability to smile through the pain from her multiple falls. Brooke's still got to learn her angles, Nnenna should show her personality more, and Furonda's photo is causing serious concern for Nigel. Kari reads too "catalogue" for Jared, Leslie's still not reading "model" to Tyra, and Sara's awkwardness is starting to affect her performance. Gina isn't working out with any of the judges, while Joanie's walk was the strongest of the day by far. Her photo is well liked by Tyra and Miss J., but Twiggy doesn't think she's versatile enough to pull off the photo's mile-high hairstyle.
Once the decision is made, the girls are called back in to hear the news. First called forward is Jade, followed by Danielle, Brooke, Joanie, Mollie, Sara, Furonda, Leslie and Nnenna. Gina and Kari step forward as the final two. Tyra explains to Kari that although her first two pics were great, her third wasn't up to snuff. Her walk was also an issue. Gina smiles to keep her spirits up as Tyra tells her that the judges are wondering, "Why [are you] here?" Since neither of the girls were strong in either walk or photos, who will be next to go? Tyra reveals that it's Kari, much to Gina's surprise. She seems confused when Tyra hands over her photo and cries as she accepts it.
Kari is resigned to her fate, smiling sadly as she hugs the girls goodbye. "In my mind, I thought I was going to get a picture." She has some words of wisdom for Gina: "She needs to stick up for herself because no one else will, and [she] needs to be confident in herself." Through her tears, Kari manages to find the bright side of elimination. "It's definitely hard to leave these girls, but it also means I get to go home."
