After Jay Manuel nearly sets off a panic among the girls when he mentions the word "bald," the group endures their first challenge wearing rhinestones on their skin and bald caps on their heads. While some of the models breeze through the shoot, others, including Kathy, the 20-year-old house painter from Brevard, North Carolina, and Furonda, the 24-year-old student from Stuttgart, Arkansas, have a tougher time. In the end, Furonda is given another chance to prove herself, and Kathy is sent home for not having the right look.

THE WORLD'S ____ SUPERMODEL
To start off the competition right, Jay Manuel bursts through a life-sized photograph of himself, shocking the entire group of thirteen as they wait in the hotel meeting room to find out what happens next. First up: a trip to the Bel Age Hotel for an introductory lesson in supermodeling. To get the party going, Jay introduces the world's first supermodel (or in Jade's words, "the world's oldest supermodel"), Miss Janice Dickinson. She's there to give the girls a lesson in finding the one thing that will make each girl stand out in a crowd. Behind the next set of doors awaits an impromptu press conference--talk about moving from the frying pan into the fire.

The panel of press reps includes Todd Newton, Trish Moreno, Rolanda Watts, Trey Smith and Tina Frazier. Todd opens the conference by asking who the frontrunner is and, though a bevy of the beauties shout out to answer, Danielle grabs the mic and makes her case. The girls take in the barrage of questions, some in stride, some struggling. Nnenna gets a round of applause from Janice and the panel with her answer to the question, "Who has sacrificed the most to be here?" Nnenna has wanted to model her whole life, but spent 10 years supporting her family. Now is her chance to do something for herself. Gina freezes up under the glare of the lights, unable to answer when Janice asks what it will mean if she, as an Asian woman, won the competition.

POWER PLAY
After the conference is over, Gina is humiliated, and Jade immediately calls attention to that fact. In front of the group, Jade grills Gina on her comfort level with her race, while Gina has already admitted she's in the midst of an identity crisis. Joanie recognizes Jade's actions as a power play, while Furonda worries that Gina won't be able to handle the pressure of the competition.

Jay and Janice announce the winner of the competition by a landslide: Nnenna. She gets to choose three friends to come with her and move into the house ahead of the rest of the group. Nnenna chooses Gina, Jade and Sara. When they arrive, they find the theme of the house is the ANTM Modeling Agency, with rooms centered around models such as Tyra, Twiggy, Iman, Janice and Christie Brinkley, as well as a whole room dedicated to past Top Model participants. Nnenna grabs a bed in the Iman room, while Mollie Sue makes a beeline for the Twiggy room. The house's courtyard is stunning, with vines crawling up trellises and a gorgeous swimming pool as the centerpiece. To celebrate, three of the girls make a fully clothed jump into the pool.

That night, the group runs over to an Italian eatery in Hollywood, where the wine flows freely. Gina is still reeling from her run-in with Jade earlier and imbibes a little too much champagne. Kari is sympathetic, while Kathy is frightened by her actions. Gina is later embarrassed by her behavior and vows she'll never drink again.

NOT SO POWERFUL
Later that night, some of the girls go topless in the hot tub. Kathy doesn't feel like she quite fits in with the group since she's lacking in the bra size arena. Joanie ups the ante by offering a crisp 100 dollar bill to anyone who will catwalk around the pool buck naked. Nnenna is tempted, and Jade offers to go with her, but Jade backs down when it comes to doing it on her own. Some of the competitors recognize that while Jade exudes confidence, she's got her insecurities just like the rest of them.

The next morning Tyra arrives to answer some questions for the girls. She gives them tips on how to change up expressions and how to be true to yourself during a press conference. Unfortunately, Furonda puts her foot in her mouth when she asks Tyra for advice for the girls who will be eliminated. Furonda tries to defend her question by saying that she's not asking for herself, but Tyra's eyebrows have been raised, and Danielle wonders what the heck Furonda was thinking.

PARDON ME?
The first Tyra Mail arrives and the girls gather around the message, "Let's cut to the chase." The group assumes that they'll be getting their makeovers next, so when the cars arrive for them to head out, they're excited. Joanie is jazzed when they showed up at the Warren Tricomi salon, but she and the rest of the gang are in for a rude awakening... Jay introduces Gaultier model Eve Salvail, who was discovered after shaving her head. Translation: they're all going to be bald.

There's not much of a reaction from the girls, who stand with their mouths agape.

Gina looks stunned, as does Jade, and panic starts to set in until Jay reveals that they won't actually be getting their hair cut off. Instead, they'll be wearing bald caps, and they head back out to the cars to go to the studio.

CAPPING IT ALL OFF...
The caps are applied with makeup covering them so they match, and the girls' skin is decorated with rhinestones along their neck and shoulders. Kathy is first, and her inexperience shows when she's unable to take direction well from Jay. Leslie follows, and she is elegant and graceful. Kari poses conservatively at first until Jay advises her to go for a little more weirdness. Though Jay spotted Furonda practicing in the background as the other girls went, he's disappointed to realize that once in front of the camera, "She really didn't know her angles…I think she thought she was going to nail it, and she didn't." Mollie's a little uncertain in some of her poses, while Sara is tense because she has zero modeling experience. However, Sara totally turns it out, and Jay asks her, "Where did this come from?" Jay lets Danielle know she's got to really go for it to prove herself since she's got a tough act to follow. She goes for it, and though she's unsure of what Jay means when he calls her "regal," she keeps on trucking. Wendy tries to stay away from safe poses, while Gina "looks like a deer caught in headlights in every frame." Brooke tries to keep her head down so her jaw doesn't look too wide, while Joanie ends up looking like one of the mannequins on the set, lacking emotion entirely. "That's not a good thing," Jay comments. When it's Nnenna's turn, Mollie Sue realizes that she's the main competition for all of them, and Jay too recognizes that she's a strong competitor. Finally it's Jade's turn, and she is excited to be posing for a real photographer. Her look is a little hard at first, and Jay is unhappy because he doesn't feel as though she's malleable enough to take direction. In her mind she's already got what it takes, and it's difficult for him to work with that.

REALITY SETS IN
Tyra Mail arrives that night as the girls lounge in the hot tub: the first elimination will take place the following day. The news sets in and anxiety takes over in some cases. Gina hopes to have the chance to learn from mistakes, while Kathy isn't sure what will happen regardless of her own performance.

The first panel evaluations begin as the girls arrive in front of the judges, including Tyra, Twiggy, Nigel Barker and Miss J. Alexander. The prizes: a contract with Ford Models, a photo shoot for Elle Magazine with world renown photographer Gilles Bensimon, and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl. First up for evaluation is Sara, whose gorgeous photo elicits a "wow" from the girls and judges alike. "This is the girl who didn't know anything about modeling and we found in a mall?" Tyra asks. Danielle's photo is also gorgeous, though Tyra advises her to keep her nose down so the photographer doesn't see up into her nostrils. Jade's photo is striking, but Nigel doesn't see anything special in it. In the press panel, Jade came off as arrogant. She tries to exude humility in front of the panel, but Nigel is not pleased as she talks over him. Joanie's eyes are spectacular in Twiggy's opinion, and Tyra is stunned at how beautiful her photo is. Gina's photo turns out nicely as well, and Nigel lets her know not to hide her face behind her hair. While Mollie Sue's photo is lovely, Tyra suggests that she try not to squint her eyes to convey intensity. Furonda's photo doesn't impress Nigel, while Twiggy likes her eyes. On the other hand, while Twiggy doesn't see a connection between Wendy and the camera, Nigel likes that she's showing an emotion, even if its sadness. Nnenna's turn comes, and Nigel has one word for it: "Lovely." Kathy's personality appealed to the press panel, though they want her to work on softening her accent. Her photo doesn't quite do it for the judges, and Kathy realizes that the problem is that her eyes are vacant in the shot. Kari follows and all of the judges love her angelic photo. Leslie's photo is gorgeous, and Twiggy says she wouldn't have recognized her standing in front of her. However, Tyra says she should avoid the heavy makeup that she wore to the judges' panel because it covers rather than enhances her face. Brooke's photo comes last and it's just barely a profile shot. Twiggy's disappointed because she can hardly see her face, and Tyra advises her to practice posing in the mirror in a way that doesn't emphasize her strong jaw.

THE FIRST EVALUATION
Now it's time for the judges to decide who will be eliminated. Nnenna has everything going for her in both Nigel's and Twiggy's eyes--her face and her body are outstanding. Brooke's photo doesn't go over well, but Tyra points out that the exaggeration of her features will make her stand out in the modeling world. Something about Danielle struck Nigel as soon as he saw her: "Extraordinary, regal, that bone structure--wow, it works." Nigel also questions if Gina has any personality to her, while Mollie seems flat to Tyra (though Nigel thinks she's sexy). Kathy doesn't look like a model to Twiggy, and J. sees her as a "hillbilly with a philosophy…[that she] can win this competition by being sweet, southern and a bit different." Sara is given a resounding "yes!" from all the judges; J. calls Sara his "six foot one Scarlett Johanssen." Tyra sees a model in Joanie's picture, though she's not translating in person quite yet. Furonda's photo is a bit too alien for Nigel and though Tyra doesn't like it either, she wonders if Furonda's got something special that she hasn't seen yet. Leslie's eyes are lovely, but her hands could use some work, while Wendy's sadness works for Nigel because it's totally new to Top Model. When Tyra fills in the judges about her situation, Twiggy is shocked, and she questions whether Wendy will be strong enough to handle the competition. Jade's photo garners less attention from the judges than her attitude; she frightened Twiggy, while Tyra wonders why she's always feeling the need to scream about how great she is. Nigel puts it succinctly: "If conceited drag queen is in, then perhaps she has a future in modeling."

MEASURING UP
Finally, the decision is made, and the girls line up to hear the results. The first name Tyra calls is Nnenna. Next up are Sara, Leslie, Joanie, Kari, Danielle, Jade, Mollie Sue, Brooke, Gina and Wendy. The last two remaining are Furonda and Kathy, who step forward. Tyra tells Furonda that she needs to reel in that ego because she didn't perform as well as she thought she did. As for Kathy, the judges don't think that her pretty face measures up. Who will it be? Unfortunately for the southern girl, Kathy is eliminated, and Furonda gets a second chance to prove to the judges that she has potential.

A tearful Kathy embraces the girls before she thanks the judges and heads back to the hotel to pack her things. "I am very disappointed. I did not want to be the first to go home," she confesses. "I felt like this was maybe my chance to shine, but I guess not. I just want to say this isn't the end…I'm going to be on the cover of something, someday. Just wait."
