The girls get their makeovers this week and while some, like Mollie Sue and Brooke, are thrilled with their new looks, neither Sara nor Jade are particularly happy with their results. Jade's attitude and perceived arrogance land her in the final two next to Wendy, but Jade survives another week, while Wendy is sent home because she just hasn't lived up to her potential.
TARGET PRACTICE
Once the girls return to the house, Jade reveals that she is disappointed Nigel said she was arrogant at the panel. While she truly sees herself as a humble person, Gina was pleased that Nigel addressed her behavior. Furonda also calls Jade on the unkind words she's said to Gina over the previous days, later explaining, "I know the type of person [Jade] is. If she feels she's found an easy target, she works it."
The next morning, the transformations begin at the Warren Tricomi Salon, where hair colorist Joel Warren and stylist Edward Tricomi prepare to give the girls their makeovers. Everyone is excited to hear what they're going to look like as Tyra ticks off the list: Kari will get big, blonde Brigitte Bardot locks; Leslie will get thicker, longer hair; Sara will get a platinum blonde faux-hawk; Danielle will have a long, wavy weave; Brooke will get a Gisele Bundchen do; Joanie will go icy blonde; Nnenna will get all her hair buzzed off (due to the strength of her first bald shot); Furonda will get a long, straight weave parted down the middle; Wendy's hair will be lightened; Gina will get some angular layers; Mollie Sue will get the Mia Farrow cut Tyra wanted to see on cycle 4's Cassandra and Jade will get a pixie-short blonde cut.
FURONDA'S RULES FOR SUCCESSFUL INTERACTION
Jade is discouraged with Tyra's choice for her because she really believes that girls with long hair get more work than those with short hair. As she continually complains, many of the girls have one reaction: "Shut. Up. Jade." Sara's not happy with her not-so-conservative do, though she vows not to complain about it, while Brooke is really pleased about her layers and color. Gina's a little disappointed that her change wasn't so drastic, and Mollie is thrilled with her flattering short cut. Furonda digs her new weave, and Kari is resigned to having a little bit of a "Barbie" look. Nnenna feels empowered by being bald, though she believes she'll have to work harder because she doesn't "have any hair to hide behind." Joanie is psyched about her new style, and Leslie just thinks "sexy" when she sees her waves. Since Wendy's hair requires less up-keep than before, her new "urban glam" is working for her. Danielle is also happy with her Rapunzel hair. In the end, Jay explains that the following day, the girls will have to choose an outfit to express their own personal style at the GenArt fashion show, so they have some time to think about what they want.
Back at the house, Furonda springs a printed list of "rules" on the girls, which she distributes to everyone individually:
1. I will treat you in a way identical to, or worse than, the way you treat me.
2. I am the best person to discuss me with.
3. If you need anything other than emergency items, please do not ask me.
4. Stay out of my personal business unless I invite you in.
Most of the girls aren't impressed. The words "diva" and "primadonna" come up in discussions of the list, and Jade chalks Furonda's attitude up to the new confidence her hair has granted her.
CAPTURING A STYLE
At the GenArt fashion show, the girls watch carefully as each model walks the runway. Wendy has a tough time staying focused; her attention remains on the trials her hometown is facing. When the show is complete, Jay sends the girls on a race among the racks of clothes from the show so they can all find what they think reflects their personality best. On her search, Jade feels as though her new hairstyle has thrown her off; she has trouble connecting herself with blonde, short hair.
Once the fashions are selected, the girls meet with stylist to the stars, Rachel Zoe, and ANTM cycle 4 winner, Naima Mora. The guests explain the rest of the challenge: to complete their hairstyles, makeup and wardrobe in 15 short minutes, with a little help from Naima and Rachel. The winner will receive a $5,000 shopping spree, so they've got to really nail it to make their mark. Using the new "Queen" collection of CoverGirl makeup designed by Queen Latifah, the girls get started. Naima advises some of them on the right colors to choose for their skin tones.
When the challenge is complete, Rachel makes her assessments. A few of the girls were close, like Wendy, Leslie, Brooke and Furonda. Others, like Joanie, Danielle and Kari, were further off the mark. The results: Nnenna wins her second consecutive challenge, and both Mollie and Furonda are disappointed not to have won. Nnenna chooses her roommates, Gina and Jade, to join her on the shopping spree, hoping that it will bring them closer. They all have a great time spending their cash at Nanette Lepore, and though Jade and Gina still aren't friends, they're able to shop without incident.
ICE, ICE, BABY
Later that night, Wendy takes some time to talk to her mom on the phone, while Jade complains that she hasn't been able to use the phone at all since they've been in the house. As time passes, Furonda and Mollie Sue (and Joanie, who listens in from down the hall,) crack up as Jade begins to rant about how ANTM doesn't stand for "America's Next Top Best Friend," and how she's the next undiscovered supermodel. Even Wendy tells Jade she needs to keep her attitude in check when it comes to the other girls in the house. The tension is high; Furonda's rules are nothing compared to Jade's attitude. Sara jokes later that "the peroxide's going to her brain."
For their next challenge, the girls arrive at the Union Ice Company warehouse, which is freezing and packed with ice. The girls shiver as Jay Manuel introduces photographer Richard Reinsdorf, who will be shooting them on a set of ice for a mock magazine cover. The girls' makeup is icy and cool, and they fight the cold as they take their turns on the set. Jay isn't impressed by the fact that Sara's mouth stays open in all of her pictures, while he reads shock on Nnenna's face during her shoot. Mollie's got a great look but needs more range, Danielle has to keep the "ho" out of her expression, and Joanie has trouble with the chilly environment as well. The weight of Wendy's world reads on her face, Kari is hit or miss in her posing, and Leslie's face registers every bit of the cold. The first 50 frames of Gina were useless, while Brooke can really exude sexiness without the sleaze factor. Jade just doesn't feel her beauty during her shoot, and Jay encourages her to smile through her ice princess façade. Jade sticks around during the last shoot, and while Jay is really pleased with Furonda's relaxed performance, Jade is certain Furonda is no threat to her.
HUMBLE PIE
The next day, it's time for the second elimination. Tyra is happy with the results of all the makeovers as the girls stand before her. She introduces the judges, including guest judge, Rachel Zoe. The evaluations begin with Danielle. While her photo is strong, Nigel is not happy with the way she presents herself at judging. Kari's photo shows Twiggy that she has versatility, and Tyra's happy that she's willing to go for the "ugly move," which can sometimes be turned into pretty. Leslie's shot is too "men's magazine" for Nigel, while Mollie Sue's edgy look is very much "what's going on right now" in Rachel's eyes. However, Miss J. reminds Mollie that, as one of the shorter girls, she should always come to judging in heels. Miss J. likes the motion in Wendy's shot, but the volume of her new hair emphasizes the narrowness of her shoulders. After Wendy's hair is slicked back with some water, Wendy tells the judges she's trying not to think about her circumstances back home during the competition. While Twiggy likes Joanie's pose in her shot, Tyra thinks it's way too safe. Twiggy and Nigel are both disappointed in Sara's performance; she's got what it takes and now needs to embrace her new look. Brooke's walk, presence and photo impress Twiggy, and Nigel loves the fact that all the wrongs about her make a right. Tyra and Rachel are both happy with Furonda's performance, even though Twiggy misinterprets Furonda's quietness at judging as shyness. While Gina's photo is beautiful, it's not quite a cover, and Nnenna's "fashion forward" photo impresses Nigel. Last is Jade, who scares Twiggy a little as she steps forward. When she reveals to the panel that she's having a tough time with some of the girls, Nigel recommends that she leave her baggage behind when she comes to judging. Jade later comments that the eye makeup during the shoot was hard to work with, Nigel reminds her once again that she needs to hunker down and not complain about the tougher parts of the job.
KNOCK IT OUT
Deliberations begin with Nnenna, whose quiet confidence really grabs both Nigel and Rachel. Twiggy considers Gina pretty, but Nigel thinks she's really off-kilter in person. Brooke, on the other hand, is a stand out: Twiggy can't keep her eyes off her when she's in the line-up. Sara didn't nail her connection with the camera, though she has a great look, and Nigel has a problem with Joanie's bad teeth. Wendy doesn't connect with any members of the panel, and Leslie is reading too "men's magazine" this week. Twiggy's not wild about Mollie, though she loves her hair, and Miss J. looks sideways at Rachel when she says how much she loves Furonda. Twiggy wants to see more from both Kari and Danielle, but she absolutely doesn't like Jade. Miss J. hopes to "knock some of that arrogance out of her."
The girls file back into the room to hear the results and the first name Tyra calls is Brooke. Next are Danielle, Nnenna, Kari, Furonda, Gina, Mollie Sue, Leslie, Sara and Joanie. Wendy and Jade remain as the final two, and they step forward. Tyra sees two beautiful and interesting women before her; Wendy is modelesque, but her photos aren't measuring up to her potential, while Jade's arrogance and excuses annoy the judges. Unfortunately for Wendy, Jade is given another chance to show the judges "the real Jade," and Wendy is eliminated.
"I think I was a little shocked when Tyra delivered the news that I would be going home," Wendy says later as she prepares to depart. "I think that my family would be proud of me that I've made it this far. I don't look at it as the end of modeling for me. I'd really like to think of it as a beginning."
