Curriculum

According to Taylor (2000), teachers can add to existing curriculum by acknowledging the homosexuality of major providers to education and society. Information about these individuals can be woven into the curriculum. Riddle (1996) provided some examples on how to do this:

  • English classes can use books by gay authors, books that involve gay characters or revolve around gay issues.

  • Human sexuality and biology classes can include lessons focused on sexual orientation.

  • History classes can include gay issues when teaching about discrimination, discussing current events, and when studying minority groups' struggle for equal rights. (p. 44)

These issues should and can be integrated into all subject areas and grade levels in developmentally appropriate ways.
