Libraries

GLSEN (1999) stated that school libraries are often the first place that students turn to for information on sexuality. Very often, few or no works on gay issues are found in the library. Library books concerning gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues need to be up to date and reflect the diversity of the school community. These materials need to be easily accessible to students. Riddle (2000) agreed with the importance of libraries having a collection of books that will be helpful for gay adolescents. Not only should books deal with homosexuality in general, they should also include “homosexuality and history, politics, religion, sports, art, literature, and film” (p. 42). This prevents books on the topic of homosexuality from being confined to one section of the library.
