Extracurricular Activities

Riddle (1996) explained that extracurricular organizations provide the opportunity for gay and non-gay students and teachers to meet and work to raise the awareness of all community members. GLSEN added that these gay/straight alliances help fight harassment in schools by exhibiting a zero tolerance attitude by an organized group of students. Students talking to students is an affective way of educating peers of the damages caused by discrimination and violence. These clubs also offer a sense of belonging to students along with the chance to make a positive change in their school. Groups help students overcome their fear and isolation, and encourage them to stay in school. Some group services include counseling, peer support, health information, and referrals. They may even work with families and offer antibias training for teachers.
