Nondiscrimination Clauses

One change that schools can implement to provide lesbian and gay students with a sense of security is to add sexual orientation to the school’s nondiscrimination clause or harassment policy. According to GLSEN, this prohibits anyone in the school community from being discriminated against or harassed because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender or perceived to be. Adding sexual orientation to policies is a good way to ensure that discrimination and harassment do not occur because people know that the school does not tolerate it. These clauses give students who are harassed an opportunity for recourse (Riddle, 1996, p.42).
