Minilites

Wheels

All +2 Elans had knock on hubs, with either a three eared spinner securing the wheel or, in the case of Federal Elans, hexagonal centre lock wheel nuts. The former are removed with a mallet the latter with a large spanner.

Elan +2

On the +2 pressed steel 5.5j wheels were fitted, with its distinctive 10 lozenge shaped cut-outs. These wheels seem to have been silver painted in all cases.

Elan +2S

The same wheel was retained for the +2S, with the outer rim chromed and the centre painted black. An option to fit alloy wheel was available.

Elan +2S 130

From mid 1973 onwards a 5.5j Brand Lotus 10 spoke alloy wheel became a standard fitting, with the spokes picked out in silver against the rest of the wheel being painted black.

Note the Federal retaining nut in this picture, compared to the three eared spinner shown above.

Other wheels

Over the years owners seem to have tried a range of alternatives as the supplies of replacements dried up. Minilites look passable, but most modern alloys look out of place. I have seen a silver +2 with wire wheels, which did look good.

Spyder have produced a Minilite wheel details of which can be found on this leaflet.
