The Janera League gym challenge is unlike the Indigo league or the similar challenges of Hoenn and Johto. Rather than simply battling the opposing leader, a challenging trainer must first fight and defeat a disciple of the gym - a junior trainer, in essence. This battle is normally one on one with a single Pokémon per side, although two on two is occasionally used in certain gyms. For a victory, the trainer's hand is stamped with the gym's crest and the trainer is free to challenge the leader until the crest wears off or they emerge victorious in a fight against that leader.
Some of the gyms, namely the Strike, Flare, Mercury and Static leaders, also require the trainer themselves to complete certain challenges. As a result these badges are harder to acquire than the others and some trainers end up skipping certain gyms to return later.

Extra Challenge: Surrounding Brawbell is a living wall of mutant brambles. One hundred metres wide and fifty metres tall, these sharp-thorned plants have no qualms about taking out eyes... or anything else they can gouge away. If a trainer is lucky enough to have managed to get in, I'm sorry to say that the leader in this town is just going to send him/her back out, straight into the midst of the wall! There are three Scyther living in the bramble fortress and, to gain permission to challenge the gym, any trainer must catch one of them in something other than a Pokeball. This means lots of running through nets of sharp spines, making this challenge one of the most hated in the league.

Extra challenge: Near to this gym is a large building containing several circuits with electromagnets. There are three rooms to progress through and to move forward the trainer must change the status (on/off/direction) of the currents running through them to open the door. Once this is completed the final door will open and the trainer may take the special key located there back to the leader as proof of their success.
