The University of Tennessee Medical Center
TSA members who went to UT Medical Center were greeted by Dr. Randy Hembree, a radiologist, and Jeff Gregory, pilot of the UT Lifestar Helicopter. UThospital.gif

Technology plays a major part in the work of UT Hospital. In the radiology department, new technology is being used to improve MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), CT (computerized tomography), CAT (computerized axial tomography), and PET (positron emission tomography) scans, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy.

In order to work in a medical profession, according to Dr. Hembree, a person must be people-oriented, must have taken heavy biology and algebra classes, and must like technology and science. TSA members should also be well-versed in these fields. According to Mr. Gregory, Lifestar pilots must want to continue their paramedic training over the years and be able to work well under time pressure.

DeRoyal Industries
In the heart of Powell, just behind the high school, stand the facilities for DeRoyal Industries. This company manufactures supplies for medical facilities, fromderoyal.JPG (59202 bytes) bandages to braces for broken limbs. DeRoyal is very active in the community; it offers tours of its facilities and internships for high school students. The CEO of the company, Pete Debusk, gives to many worthy causes, including the local Boys & Girls Club.

Technology is important at DeRoyal because it helps the company keep ahead of its competitors. TSA members learn the communication, teamwork, and listening skills needed to be DeRoyal employees. It is important for employees to be very detail-oriented also.
