WATE-TV

WATEpowell2.jpg (62903 bytes)A business that deals with both global culture and the local community is the local ABC affiliate, WATE-TV. The 6 Eyewitness News station is very willing to allow student tours and air news stories about local school events.

WATE-TV uses ever-changing technology to broadcast the news to East Tennessee and counties in western North Carolina, southwestern Virginia, and southeastern Kentucky. The station has several reports on new developments in technology, including the "Healthbeat," which airs at least twice a week. WATE is also active in the community, especially with their "6 on Your Side" consumer advocacy stories. WATE can be found at www.wate.com.

The station frequently gives student tours. Here several TSA members from Powell High School meet Nancy Lynne-Trentham, one of the morning anchors.

Ruby Tuesday's

rubytuesdaygroup.gifHowever strange as it may seem, this national chain of restaurants relates to communication. Servers, cooks, and managers must be able to communicate with each other and with patrons in order to provide a quality dining experience.

Ruby Tuesday's began in Knoxville in 1972. When student groups visit its headquarters in Maryville, TN, personnel trainers (such as Tom Craft, seen on the left) make sure that students know about the opportunities for advancement in the corporation. Students also pond.gif (53044 bytes)tour the test kitchen, where new recipes are developed, tested, and either discarded or advanced through the restaurants.

Communication is one of the keys of leadership, which the Ruby Tuesday's trainers also lecture about. At Ruby Tuesday's, most employees go through a leadership training program that involves problem solving, teamwork, communication, optimism, brainstorming, and time management.
