Undoubtedly, the sensation one receives from the community spirit adds
a beautiful energy to one's practice; even so, one does not need a roomful
of other yogis in order to practice yoga or an audience in order to feel
the benefits of our meditation and poses. The true focus of our yoga practice
is within the self.
There
are some very practical reasons why practicing yoga at home might be more
beneficial to a beginner or advanced practitioner.
Practicing
Yoga at Home?? Is it good or bad?
Oftentimes,
we don't think about the extra effort we put into doing something for our
health as an added amount of stress in our life. We say, "I am doing this
for my health, it must be okay and I have no other choice." In our desire
to better ourselves, we deny certain aspects of our routine that might
be causing more harm than good.
Think
about how throughout your day you are trying to meet a deadline to leave
your house or workplace in order to beat traffic or long train lines. This
stress builds up in your shoulders and back almost unnoticeably. Then,
during our travel, we become irritated by all the delays and the crowds,
only to get to class and have to rush into our practice.
After
our practice, we feel great and we forget all about the stress that brought
us there because we perceive that moment to be of maximum benefit. On our
way home, we are in a relaxed state of balance, only to have the crowds
and delays and the deadline to be at work or home override our recent practice.
In the end, our practice has become a routine of stress, release and stress.
If
there is not a yoga center within suitable distance from your home or workplace
that also offers a suitable price and a schedule that meets your needs,
perhaps it would be better to practice at home more often and go to class
less frequently.
There
are several yoga videos and books for sale that can help direct the practice
of those who wish to be led through their asanas or learn more about yoga
and additional yoga poses.
If
you feel you do need a sense of community for your practice, but you cannot
find a center within a reasonable distance or price range, perhaps you
can find a small group of friends or colleagues with whom to practice.
You can meet at someone's home or workplace that has a suitable amount
of space and choose you own routine. In this case, either you can follow
a practice based on a library of Yoga Videos, a routine you have practiced
and arre comfortable with, or perhaps you can find a personal yoga instructor
willing to come to your home or workplace.
Maybe
that extra 2 hours travel time used to go to and from your yoga practice
each day could be spent working towards fulfilling a life dream, relaxing,
or spending more time in your actual practice.
