Dining in Rome is an experience which should be planned as strategically as a visit to the Vatican, Coliseum or Forum. Italians are passionate about their history and passionate about their food. There is nothing fancy or stylish about Roman cooking. In fact, you will be surprised how delicious simplicity can be. There are so many different types of Italian restaurants that you seldom see any other type of cuisine in Rome. If you need relief from pasta, salads and tiramisu, just look for the golden arches or the signature red lanterns which designate a Chinese restaurant (Chinese food in Rome?).

Having a delicious meal in Rome is not an expensive experience. There are numerous pizzerias, trattorias, enotecas and fast food restaurants to keep you fed for the duration of your trip. All the restaurant recommendations offer reasonable prices and good value. A good meal in an atmospheric establishment probably wonÕt exceed more than $30 a person. This includes a feast of all courses, bottled water, wine, caffe, dessert and sometime an after dinner 'digestivo'. To economize or keep costs low, some courses can be shared such as the pasta, salad or entree. In many cases the cost can be kept significantly lower by simply ordering a salad and pizza (or pasta) with house wine or any other beverage. Oh, and if the dessert menu at the restaurant of choice doesnÕt please you, there is always Giolitti!

Restaurants are rated with one to four crowns. One crown would be a good place to try if you are in the neighborhood or passing by, but if the restaurant has four crowns, don't miss it!
