Vicolo del Leonetto, 23/25
After
a long flight from San Francisco (via Munich) we finally arrived in Rome on
a warm evening on the first day of May (May Day). We took the airport shuttle
from Rome's Aeroporto
di Fiumicino to the Roma Termini Station where we
caught a taxi to the Hotel Due Torri which is located in Old Rome near the
Piazza Navona. The taxi whisked us through the streets of Rome racing Vespas,
passing ancient monuments, sending countless pedestrians fleeing from the
streets. For us, it was a white knuckle ride. We have arrived in Rome!
After navigating countless small streets and alleys the cab came to an abrupt stop and the driver announced our arrival. "Here?", I thought? This couldn't be. I don't see a hotel and this area looks a bit run down. "Have I made a bad decision?" I didn't see a hotel but the driver was pointing to a small sign, which directed us up a small street (Vicolo del Leonetto), which directed us to the hotel. The cab was much to large to navigate the small street from here we would have to walk the short distance.
Fear not. We were not in a bad neighborhood, nor was the cab drivers skills any worse than anyone else's driving skills in Rome. We had arrived in Old Rome where the buildings are ancient and stained with the patina of time.
The
location of the Hotel Due Torri is near the Piazza Navona which is centrally
located for most sights. In its former life, the Due Torri was a residence
to famous cardinals and bishops. This hotel is not the Hilton. It is a small
privately operated hotel which has Italian charm and character. The rooms
are furnished with antique style furniture, are clean and best of all quiet!
The windows have curtains and exterior shutters which can be closed for privacy.
The bathrooms are totally modern with good showers and facilities. The staff
at the Hotel Due Torri was the most friendly I've met my travels to Europe.
They are always willing to assist with a restaurant suggestion or directions.
