In the Fall special trains run North for spectacular views of Franconia Notch. It is possible to walk around the train yard at dinner time when things are slowing down and get a close look at the engines and rolling stock. Cathedral Ledge There are great views from the top of Cathedral Ledge. The ledge is accessed from West Side Road. The road to the top is paved so it is safe and easy to drive to the top but be careful to stay behind the fence. On most days you can see rock climbers scaling the cliff. |

Fall Foliage is the main draw in the fall. Weekdays are the best time to see the foliage which usually peaks the weekend before Columbus Day Weekend . The Fryeburg Fair is a great event. The Fair as the locals call it is a 9 day event and is an old time fair dominated with agricultural events. The Fair can be an inexpensive day and a great opportunity for children to get close to farm animals. There is a midway. The best events are the opening and closing pig scrambles, the woodsman's day, the oxen pulls, and sheep dog trials. There are also fireman's musters, horse racing and national entertainers come in for nightly shows. The fair grounds are huge, several hundred acres and the weekend crowds top 100,000. But since people come and go all day long and the police have had a lot of practice handling the crowds the traffic tie ups are handled remarkably well, with minimal delays. Fall is a great time to hike and bicycle up and around town. |
