I started teaching English in 1996 after moving to Denmark in 1993 from Britain. The vocational training centre where I first found part time work is very keen on distance and open learning and I have had some great ICT training and opportunities to experiment with online course development. I have just finished the online element of an oral skills course so the issue of building an online community is very pertinent to me right now. Since my institution has just bought the WIMBA VoiceBoard system (on my recommendation) it looks as though they believe that this is the future. The website for helping learners of French is a hobby (I am half French). My course website is password protected and partly in Danish.

I am teaching English to senior high students in Taipei, who just started to take interet in how to integrate ICT in teaching in this couple of years. Therefore, apparently, there are still a lot waiting for me to explore. Presently, I am working on my second Master's degree (Educational Technology). I was drawn to this online course partly because of my research for one of my courses last semester. I was thrilled to find out such an interesting and professional online community and registered right away at that time.
I'm an English teacher in Taiwan, where technology has been grabbing intense attention. The school where I'm teaching is a technology model school, but sad to say, the projectors, big screens, and the notebooks don't necessarily mean improvement of teaching quality. Although those who are reluctant to integrate ICT in teaching are gradually changing their attitude, most of those who use the computer in class regard ICT as way to deliver PowerPoint slide shows. I see the need to teach people what ICT really can do for teachers and students. Therefore, now that I'm a graduate student in Educational Technology, I want to train teachers in to use ICT in language teaching and learning. I plan to move on to my PhD next June after I receive my masters degree.

I'm based in Hamburg, Germany and work in Kiel, the very north of Germany not far from Denmark. If you want to know more about me, you can check my website www.e-learning-international.com
(Christel is "getting started with a blended English course where I am supposed to run the eLearning part."). If anyone is interested in my first keebook you'll find it under www.e-learning-international.com under news. On this website you can also find an 'abacus demo' showing the platform I have been working on for several years.

I have been training trainers for a couple of years now. In the adult education sector, where I work, there seems to be an overload of trained trainers, but not enough learners interested in learning online. Some people in companies complain that they work at computers all day and don't want to spend their spare time learning at computers. This is what most of them say BEFORE actually taking part in an online course. As soon as they have started, we can easily win them and make them realise how communicative and interesting online learning can be and with the right blend, that it can really be challenging and most effective. However, you are addressing costs. This seems to me like one of the biggest problems and difficult to solve. The teachers we train feel that they are better qualified than ordinary teachers and want more money for running an online course than they'd get for a face-to- face course. Online learning in my view becomes a more individualised learning with more intensive tuition, which requires more tutor time. When you then add the costs for hosting a platform, books CD-ROMS and what have you, online learning can become quite costly. I don't know what your experience is in this respect. Of course there are free resources on the net like Yahoo messenger, Nicenet and others, but I don't think you can use them when you have to charge for the course.

Presently I am running an English course for 16 young woman who are trained to return to their jobs after a break ( bringing up the children etc.) Among other things - like word and excell etc. they have to learn 6-8 hours English every week. The course started in November and finishes in May. Some of the students will finish the course with the Cambridge BEC Preliminary examination and others with the European English Language Certificate. The material I'm using is some online course material (digital publishing) which comes in a package for all different levels and I picked A2 and B1 (Common European Framework). In addition to that there are face-to-face sessions every second week. We are also using an ordinary course book - which is used in the face-to-face sessions, which are run by a different tutor (I'm living 800 km away from where the students are based). This is not ideal, but OK. I am using the Course Book for inspiration, transferring some activities into collaborative tasks. (Three or 4 each week). I have devided the group into 3 small groups of 5 and 6. This is to prevent people from information overload. The participants have also got a room where they can ALL communicate.

In addition to the asynchronous sessions we are planning to integrate some synchronous sessions. The institution is working with 'Centra'. I have worked with this system before and am quite familiar with it. I think it doesn't differ much from Elluminate?

One of the most important things I have found as an onliner over the past 8 years is that it is essential to be in the position of a learner as often as you can. This way I've learned a lot about NOT to do things:-)

As you may know I am taking a Master degree in Educational Technologies and it is now time to prepare the outline of my dissertation project. It hasn't been easy to decide what I want to study. Many things came through my mind while I didn't reach the most obvious conclusion: that my study theme has always been there in front of my eyes without my noticing its potential as a GREAT master's dissertation topic. I mean our beloved community of practice - the Webheads, of course!!!!! So I informed one of my co-supervisors about it and he loved the idea. He is as excited about it as I am, since he is very interested in Virtual Learning Communities. I am so happy about it all. I hope that you share this happiness with me and approve of my intention. I will soon need you support once again to be able to carry out the study. Thank you all for the nice moments and experiences that have been provided by the sharing of practices and ideas. It has been a great ride and I am glad, and proud, that I am part of it. Webhead rule!

I'd really like to know what factors make cops fail or succeed in different organisations. In my experience (brief) of e-collaboration, it certainly seems that scaffolding helps focus a group on producing a product but on the other hand, important critiques of the assumptions made in that framework may be skipped.

I am working on using the On the Trail blog as a model to add to my first attempt at Recreational Learning for Adults or Vacation Education. I am hoping to use the blog and moodle as the electronic elements of a real tour from South Texas (Del Rio) to Kansas (Dodge City) up the old Western Trail. I am writing the text now...both users guide and teachers guide for my Instructional Design class and as soon as that comes together, I will start looking at lodging, transportation, meals etc. The whole thing will be similar to RoadScholars and Elderhostel but a little longer and a little pricier...but I hope it will also have a more challenging offering.

One of the key aspects of our courses is the creation and, more importantly, the maintenance of a lively language learning community. To do this we use various synchronous and asynchronous means of communication so anything I learn about other people's experience in virtual communities will be very interesting.

For my qualitative study, I'm looking for teachers who have tried integrating word processors into their writing lessons (ESL or EFL - in Argentina or abroad) and are willing to help me by sharing their experience (this would take about 30 minutes, either via email, Skype or messenger, you choose!). Can you help? Do you know of anyone who could? Please write me

Then I moved to the USA (Colorado), and changed my career into Instructional Design and Education Technologies. I hold a Master's Degree in Information and Learning Technologies from the University of Colorado at Denver. As I had a baby almost 3 years ago, I stayed home, and translation was the only job I could do from home (at that time). Now, I moved to Florida and I still work with translation projects and teach English for Brazilian students in Florida.
I have a domain name and got web hosting for my website http://www.idmultilingual.com. I just need to check the capabilities of the web hosting plan I signed for. This project would be for a community of linguists who would like to offer and take online courses. They already have their website professionally designed and hosted. We just need to find out whether they still have enough space left or they need get another account just for the online courses. I'll keep you all updated on this experiment!

I work at a cégep in Montreal. My role at the College is hard to define. I basically develop and supervise projects that touch on many different academic areas but which all have as their primary goal to support student success. One of these is the development of a blended version of an Academic Writing Skills course. The F2F version of this course has existed for several years and is aimed at preparing students to study in English at the cégep level. I am now working to integrate technology into this course in meaningful ways and to make the learning environment richer and more student-centered. Along with this, I have started engaging other teachers of this course into talks about pedagogy and their approaches to teaching; I am hoping that as a group, we can slowly move towards a more constructivist view of learning. I am now entering the development phase of this project and am hoping to begin pilot testing in the summer (July/August). As the project moves along, I am sure that I will be posting questions and asking for feedback. I am completely new to all of this, and as is the case with many of you, I am a team of 1! Thank you Webheads for existing! I will try to make it to the next Sunday chat.
For those who are not familiar with Québec's education system, a cégep is somewhat like a community college. The typical educational path here consists of 6 years of primary school, 5 years of secondary school, 2 years of cégep and then 3 years of university for a bachelor's degree. Students preparing for technical careers complete 3 years of cégep and then are ready to enter the workforce. Most cégeps are publicly funded and are a required step prior to pursuing a university degree. Vanier College (where I work) has a very multicultural student body. Though the language of instruction is English, no more than 35% of incoming students have ever studied in this language; most are either coming from French high schools or have completed their secondary studies in another language in another country. (Note: in Québec, students may only attend English school if at least one of their parents did. This implies that almost anyone new to Québec has to study in French through to the end of high school. After that, they may choose to continue in French or switch to English. Many make the switch!). All of this to say that ESL is very big here!

I am always in awe about the collaboration and the drive you all have to be the best teacher your students can wish for. I am not a language teacher as such but a teacher in a primary setting covering a wide range of curriculum areas. I have a digital classroom though, meaning that most my curriculum is delivered electronically. I have take so much from all of you and it has greatly improved my language (english) lessons. My students are all blogging and we have an active Moodle for homework, unit work, etc. My students are very motrivated through the altenative approach of learning and teaching. Makes my job so much more satisfying.

As of November 2004, Susanne Nyrop describes herself as "an e-learning consultant in Denmark (and a Webheads in Action community builder) . This fall, I started to work with an innovative course developer, Knowplace. I'm now also part of the Knowtips conference commitee" http://www.xanga.com/susnyrop
Sept, 2005: I'm currently deeply involved in two projects related to webheads: Den nordiske stemme - an online community of practice preparing a free online conference from November 7 to 12, targeting Nordic language educators and course developers etc, and their need to find practical uses for electronic voice tools in the neighbor language classroom - and a TESOL EVOnline 2006 workshop on Social blogging for collaborative language learning and teaching, starting in January 2006. My latest and most active experimental blog is at

After working as an early childhood educator, in 1995 I did a bachelor of educational communication and multimedia. As this field was so new, I found the Internet the only way to get inspired, informed and involved in educational online communities, such as Webheads, Tapped In, and the Global Educators Network. Now I am a free lance essayist and lecturer, an external examiner at the social educators' colleges, and finishing a masters study of theoretical education at the Danish University of Education in Copenhagen.. Despite my interest in foreign language, I have no credentials for teaching it; I am an EFL learner in practice.

I live in a small town by the sea, ten-minutes from the more touristic Estoril and Cascais, and 30-minutes from Lisbon. I've taught English at all levels, including college, for over 25 years. Now I'm teaching 9th grade EFL. I love teaching and find it even more challenging with new technologies. I've done three email cultural exchanges this year as well as interactive Web-based activities custom-made for my two classes. I love computers, the Internet and keeping up with friends, cyberpals, and job-related developments through email. I did my first online course last October and really enjoyed the experience.

May 05, 2005 Comment from user: I'm Tom Zurinskas, retired FAA quality control and human engineer specialist. I live near West Palm Beach FL with wife Bonnie. My avocation is phonetic spelling. I'm interested in showing how fast English adepts can learn truespel. Also in showing that using a phonetic spelling first is the best way to teach/learn reading. It has been shown that a person could learn to read in a short time with a consistent phonetic spelling system. My system, truespel, is a new, simple standard that will replace dictionary key spelliing and pronunciation guides because it is keyboard friendly. It is mature and I've written an analysis of English using it. It also converts web pages and is everywhere and free - see truespel.com.

After teaching ESL for 20 years I started working full time in software development (2 years) and consulting in and coordinating CALL implementations (ever since). I missed the classroom but soon found that I could continue teaching online. Actually, I don't believe there is such a thing as language teaching, only language learning, so more correctly I've been experimenting with multimedia synchronous and asynchronous communications tools to promote authentic communication among students, and more recently, among peers. I conceived this session as a continuation of these experiments. I hope you will enjoy participating.
I am taking a class about computer assisted language learning and our professor felt that this group would be helpful and appropriate.
I am a TESL teacher in Taiwan, and my current interest is in CMC and CALL. I would like to join this group and explore the possibility of utilizing new teach in my teaching.

Susanne Nyrop has been my mentor for one applied project, and we'll be starting another one next month. (So, as you can see, I'm in good hands). Currently there are no online or blended ESL classes being offered at my college. (There are some distance ed. courses in other programs, but not too many.) This is something I want to change. The Administration ctte for the department I teach in (International Education) has agreed to put me on the agenda for their meeting next week, so I can make my case.

The above list is ordered by email address because that's the order that Yahoo gives it to me, and if I use the same order it makes it easier for me to check the two lists against each other.

When member mail bounces, the addresses go in a special 'bouncing' list at Yahoo. Moderators can see the list and cause activation requests to be sent to the users' emails. An activation request is a message sent to the user asking the user to respond if the email problem has been fixed. If the user responds, that address is returned to the active list. The reason for the bounce is also given on the bounce list (over quota, unknown address on that host server, etc). I can remove bounced emails from the list but in these days of prolific spam it's pretty easy for addresses to bounce when the owners are away and still checking list traffic via the Internet. So I don't take any action, except to record when I notice it, and in cases of inactive members, maybe remove them after some time has passed.
