PROLOGUE
What a strange thing life is. When you're young you're so oblivious to the things in life that you grow up to worry and fret over. As a child the world looks beautiful, and always seems to have a million and one doors open, waiting for you to go through them and discover what secrets are hidden within its walls. Childhood is far more precious than we think as children, and we only grow up to regret doing just that, growing up.
I never wanted to grow up when I was a little girl. In fact, that day I started my period, at the tender age of eleven, I hid in my room and cried for hours. I also hid it from my mother, fearing what she would say and do. I feared her being upset and crying over becoming old now that I was "all grown up". I never wanted to hear the words "all grown up".
It wasn't denial that drove me to want to stay young. It wasn't fear of becoming old. It was fear of having to deal with reality and life on a more serious note. As a child, nothing had to be serious. As an adult, you never had a moment where you could escape reality. If you tried to escape it, you were considered crazy and diagnosed with some mental illness that probably truly didn't exist anyway.
How sad it was that eventually my wish to stay young wouldn't become an answered prayer. As hard as I tried to keep my mind childlike, I wouldn't have a choice but to face reality. It was hard for most people to grow up and look into the face of reality. But it was even more difficult for me, and anyone else like me, who wanted to stay a child forever. Oh, how I would regret ignoring reality for so long, when it would come and slap me right in the face.
