Residence: Toronto, ON CANADA
B.Sc. (Math & Physics), Dalhousie University
M.Math (Applied Math), University of Waterloo
Engineering-physics systems analyst, engineering designer, programmer ( J )
Strict lacto-vegetarian (vegevore). Hate smoking.
Major interests: (require a lot of time, money or energy):
Music: Taught myself how to read music and enjoy playing: mostly piano and some guitar (Chord); have played in an amateur international folk-dance band (Music). Recently got a violin. (I appreciate musical talent.)
Dancing: Most Saturday evenings (non-summer) I go to a contra-dance (a very modernized form of olde tyme country square dancing that is done in lines), also do: English, international folk, Irish, and several other types of dancing.
Vegetarian: I am a strict lacto-vegetarian (for taste, health, moral and other reasons) and have been so for more than 30 years, study nutrition/health, and like trying new (and old) vegetarian restaurants. My diet these days (give or take those restaurant visits).
Walking: While other people drive to the corner store, I walk: try to walk a couple of miles EVERY day and live about a mile from banks, produce stores, a movie theatre, and a library.
Reading: I spend at least an hour each day reading the newspaper and also read science magazines (mostly: Scientific American). But only rarely read actual books.
Sailing: Have taken some sailing courses and have done some kayaking. I don't yet have a sail boat, but would like to get one some day (picture shows the Bluenose): obviously, it requires some money, effort and most summer weekends.
| Physics: (It just looks like it's all Greek).

I still spend some of my time contemplating ideas in physics (see below). This has required (and still does) a great deal of time and study.
Gardening: Grow a lot of plants indoors, mostly from seeds of fruits that I eat, and would like some day to buy a nice greenhouse. The main product of my heavily shaded backyard is black raspberries (sketch also shows Jerusalem artichokes). (Garden)
Minor interests: movies, swimming (any real vacation must include water!), biking, etc.
History: When I was a teen, I wanted to be an architect. (House design)
Later, was introduced to physics (see below) when a friend of my older sister gave me a physics text. (Inspiration)
Physics: Hypothesis:
Nutrition: Eat Flax seed. And Turmeric, too.
Bicycle: Recumbant front-wheel-drive Bike design.
Energy: Low pollution home heating (GSHP).
Energy: Myths about greenhouse gas.
Humour: Everybody seems to have a Humour page.
Mini diary:
= New stuff (2007 Oct):
- New look at Stirling engine: solved sealing problem. Other innovations.
- Did some computer modelling of electric motors.
= New stuff (2007 Aug):
- Looking into doing some engineering work; one idea to extract more power from Niagara Falls). Relatedly, studying some fluid dynamics.
= New stuff (2007 Mar):
- Energy myths about greenhouse gases.
= New stuff (2007 Feb):
- Helping with sets & props at a theatre group.
- Studying ways to reduce cost/energy thus GHG, esp. coal.
- New study from MIT on practicality of electricity from geothermal.
= New stuff (2006 Jun):
- Working on: Is DHA essential & important in Alzheimer's? Is pH of Universe 120? Clean energy options (e-cars, gshp, sources).
= New stuff (2005 May):
- A mortgage calculator (in colour!).
= New stuff (2005 Mar):
- Kellogg's may include omega-3 fat (DHA) in some of its products.
- Sudbury Neutrino Observatory has new data on neutrino mass.
= New stuff (2005 Feb):
- Very detailed nutritional analysis/spreadsheet of my diet for 7 days.
= New stuff (2004 Nov):
- Wrote political commentary: "Flax and the real reason Bush won."
= New stuff (2004 Jul):
- Physics, dark energy: "Estimates of the energy density in all these whizzing neutrinos are sketchy. But it seems to be roughly similar to the dark energy density at the present time, and the Washington team suggests that is not just a coincidence." - Science News, 2004 July
And: "... scientists have noticed that the energy scale associated with dark energy, about one-thousandth of an electronvolt, is approximately the same as the masses associated with the three known types of neutrinos." - Science News, 2004 May 22.
= New stuff (2004 Mar):
- What is the problem with geothermal energy?: No fuel costs, no decommissioning worries, no risk of explosion, and almost no pollution (main by-product is clean hot water). With a severe shortage of electricity in Ontario, serious thought is being given to new multi-billion dollar nuclear plants. And geothermal energy is considered expensive because it costs a few hundred million to drill a deep hole? Something doesn't add up.
- New rapid expansion period in cosmology?
= New stuff (2004):
- Maybe we'll get some new data on the mass of the neutrino this year.
- Recent data suggests that the Universal acceleration has been increasing: My hypothesis is in trouble if that is true.
= New stuff (2003 Sep):
- Smoking now kills about 5 million people per year worldwide. Add logo.
= New stuff (2003 Jul):
- Physics: new notes on neutrinos (P.4, #5, Acceleration).
= New stuff (2003 Mar):
- Physics: new thoughts on whether "chemistry" had to do with inflation.
- Added Diet page.
= New stuff (2002 Oct):
- Script: Colour selector (with Chord selector).
= New stuff (2002 Sept):
- From a news report: "The two-volume report by 50 Canadian and U.S. scientists recommends ... minimum daily amounts of two polysunsaturated fatty acids ... for alpha-linolenic acid the recommendations are 1.6 grams for men and 1.1 grams a day for women ... acknowledged that the recommended omega-3 intake was substantially below daily amounts found beneficial ...."
= New stuff (2002 Jun):
- Idea for a new lawnmower: built and tested a protype: works well but there is no interest in a lawnmower which is more efficient, safer, quieter and of lower powered in an 'SUV-market'.
- Added chord generator script/page.
- Added link to a piece of music.
= New stuff (2002 May):
- Flax: My idea of enlarged brain from fish confirmed by Dr. Cunnane.
- Physics: Newest from SNO: confirm neutrino types and mass ratios...
- Music: Got a new toy: a violin!
