Argyle, Aprilarrived 12 Apr 1841, barque 634 tons, Rattery master, from Liverpool 7 Nov 1840 and Cape of Good Hope 11 Feb, to Port Phillip arrival under AB Smith of Sydney,Captain Henry Rattray, surgeon Dr Jeffrey James Keatinge who later wed passenger Margaret Nelson. Cabin passengers Mr and Mrs Jones, Mr Finch/French, Mr Furnis/Furness, Mr Parry/Perry Intermediate Mr and Mrs Scales with 5 children, Mr Wilson. Steerage 255 landed 4 adults and 16 children died before reaching Capetown, another 25 died before arriving at Port Phillip. 255 in steerage reported 44 deaths mainly children and during the voyage, attributed to dysentry - 44 families with 164 souls, 17 simgle males and 46 single females, total 227 souls, being 79 Catholics and 148 Protestants, 124 could read, 105 could write, claimed 3492 pounds Bounty money
Perilous Voyages pages 58-62 recounts story of Peter Costello who came with 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Mary Costello wed Patrick Kennedy in 1843 and in August 1851 he was executed for murdering Mary on 30 Apr 1851 - the first person to be judicially executed in the newly established Colony of Victoria. The same family? The Voyage to Australia on the Duke of Argyle, account of the Pioneering Experiences of Patrick Costello - Part 1 is Leaving Liverpool - among the unmarried passengers are listed Patrick Costello 25 and Walter Costello 28 answered 'neither read nor write', Bridget Costello 20 and Mary Castello 23 both can only read. Which vessel named Argyle? - On a Shipwrecks page, Aliquis. Ship. Captain Gill. From Port Jackson to Calcutta, lost near Mount Adolphus Island, Torres Strait, May 1839. No lives lost. Crew picked up by the ship Argyle, also bound Sydney to India.
