* NSW Archives, shelf locaton is 4/4814, page 13. Agent John Marshall in conjunction with 3 Flinders Lane merchants, George Thomas, John Enscoe and George James. Captain George Warren and surgeon Thomas Baynton in charge.
Thanks to the Archives of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in London, have discovered that Thomas Baynton was apprenticed to his father, that he was born on 19 October 1819, and that he actually qualified as a doctor on 22 April 1841. Given that he arrived in Victoria on 30 August 1841, and that the voyage routinely took three months, he must have left England almost as soon as he had qualified. Hie was accompanied by his father and siblings - Thomas Baynton died in 1872, which (if he's the right person) would have made him about 80 since the Thomas Baynton I am looking for was born in Somerset in 1792.
A barque of 476 tons, the Strathfieldsay was built at Chepstow in 1829, and was owned by T Ward of London, wrecked 1842. In 1841, mastered by N Warren and carrying migrants, the Strathfieldsay journeyed from London on 1 May, called at Plymouth and Port Phillip, before sailing on to Sydney which she reached on 5 October.
Deaths nil, 1 birth,
Bounty passengers 88 males, 106 females, 5 chn over 7, 22 between 1 and 7 years, 1 infant, 228 souls.
Master George Warren, Superintendant Thomas Baynton, Crew John Thompson 1st Mate, ?Edwards 2nd Mate and John Stirling 3rd Mate
The labour market in Melbourne had tightened considerably by August 1841, an impact of the tension between England and America. 90% of would-be emigrants to America in 1840 did not re-apply in 1841, and indeed no vessels left for America in the first three months of 1841. Instead many chose Australia as a destination, resulting in an over-supply of labour and under-supply of accommodation in places such as Port Phillip.

"The Somerset Years", by Florence Chuk, page 53 begins a chapter on the Strathfieldsaye, including a description of the voyage. She brought a 'fine Durham bull and cow' as well as other goods. After a good voyage with no deaths, and the birth of one baby girl, the immigrants arrived tofind the labour market flooded and accommodation almost impossible to find - 1300 immigrants had been landed in the previous fortnight.
