Neptune arrived 28 Mar 1841, 611 tons Captain W James Ferris master, ship from London via Plymouth 12 Dec 1840 to Melbourne Images b 135-147, Agents Messrs Thomas Enscor & James Passengers Mr and Mrs Buckland, 3 dau and 1 son, Mr and Mrs Garde and 2 chn, Madame Pelite and child, Messrs W and J Foster, Whittey, Duenlin/Duerden, Perrott and Dr Kinglake/Kinlake, 49 Paying - 17 adult males, 7 adult females, 13 children 7-15 and 12 chn under 7, 253 steerage under superintendance of Dr Brown. Deaths on the voyage - 1 child, births 1 male. The Recapitulation is very neat - graphs trades and sex/status/age Families have 3 Smiths, 3 Shepherds, 3 Carpenters and 28 Agricultural Labourers, equal numbers of male and female adults. Children are grouped in their father's trade, 1 aged 15-18, 7m and 4f aged 7-15, 6m and 7f aged 1-7, 1m and 4f under a year, 104 souls, 1596 pounds Bounty 76 Single men - 67 agricultural labourers, 3 carpenters and 6 shepherds total 1444 pounds bounty 73 single women - 8 Dairymaids, 53 Housemaids, 7 Laundresses and 5 nurses - 1387 pounds Bounty 87 Protestants and 166 Roman Catholics, total 253. These figures do not include the other 57 names on the Victorian list. Staff included - Doctor John Brown, Crew 1st Mate Thomas Cresey, 2nd Mate Alexander Mackay, 3rd Mate TJ Duggan. Colour code Staff and Crew, Paid own passage Bounty Immigrant Disallowed Bounty departing PP See Sophia Pate wrecked, for stories of Salter, Wilkinson, Stewart Mr James Salter respectable jeweller, happily married and the father of ten fine children - perhaps had taken one last look at his fine home on the Grand Parade. He would say farewell to his friends, gathering his wife and children to head with along with all their worldly goods to the docks to leave their homeland for the last time. Also leaving their homes for the last time were Mr George Stannard a cabinet maker, his wife and family of Hammonds Marsh, and Mr John Wilkinson, his wife and their four children formerly of Daunt's Square. Along with other Irish Wesleyan families these hopeful settlers looked forward to their new lives in a new land called New Zealand. The Neptune arrived in Sydney Harbour on 14th April 1841 with 300 emigrants all noted to be in good health by the Sydney Gazette & New South Wales Advertiser 15th April 1841 these families amongst them. In Sydney the families prepared for the final journey to New Zealand and this is where the discrepancies in the story of their journey begins.
