William Houston came 1841 as Surgeon Superintendent the India which burned at Sea, The minutes of Proceedings and Register of NSW Medical Board Meeting of 30th May 1842 contained the following;
"An application was laid before the Board from Mr William Houston requesting his name be inserted in the list of "Legally qualified Medical Practitioners" and stating that his testimonials of qualifications and a Master of Surgery of the University of Glasgow had been lost by the Burning of the Emigrant Ship India of which he was Surgeon Superintendent, and this material was corroborated by his own affidavit and that of Mr Ramsay Hay. The Board agreed to receive the same and direct his name to be be inserted in the Government Gazette in the early part of July. William married Mary Ann Harris in 1845 and died in Sydney in 1868.
