Andrew McCrae sailed on 17 Nov 1839 from Tilbury on the Royal Saxon, for Sydney. His sister married 1842 to George Ward Cole who arrived at Hobson's Bay in Port Phillip in his own schooner the Waterlilly, a vessel of about 155 tons, having left London on 10 Mar 1840. He was born 1793 at Limley Castle Durham. In 1839 the letter starts "Dear papa" and is signed Mary. At this stage I think this must have been his step-daughter, as it is known (from the Internet) that Cole married a widow Eliza Cantey, the daughter of Colonel Charles Brietyche, and it is listed that they only had a son, so I think that Mary must have been the daughter of Eliza's former marriage?? The Feb. 6th 1841 Melbourne New S Wales cancel is a Purves Type B 24 x 30mm, in use from 20th April 1839 to Sept./Oct. 1841. It was most likely carried on the ship "YORK" a ship of 1016 tons. The ship left London on the 9th Nov.1840 arriving in Melbourne 5th Feb. 1841 a trip of 88 days. The ship was carrying general merchandise, 20 passengers, 20 intermediate passengers and 34 steerage passengers, the ship was the largest vessel to enter Port Phillip up to the end of 1841. Georgiana McCrae and children left London on the 11th Nov. 1840 aboard the "ARGYLE" a ship of 720 tons arriving at Hobsons Bay Port Phillip on the 1st Mar.1841 a trip of 110 days, on board were 228 bounty emigrants and 24 passengers, the McCrae's were in the passenger class. On 26th April George Ward Cole died and his wife and daughter lived at St. Ninians, the following covers are addressed to them. This is the last cover: Mrs Thomas Anne Ward Cole died in 1898, so this item is for Margaret Cole their daughter. A. McRae - McRae Sub Treasurer., Jan 1847 | ||||||

Georgiana McCrae nee Gordon, a notable artist, came with her 4 chn to join husband Andrew. The Arygle arrived in Port Phillip Bay on 27 February 1841, and anchored in Hobson's Bay on 1 March. They moved into Argyle Cottage in Little Lonsdale Street West, Melbourne. She made good friends with Sophie La Trobe, and Governor Charles La Trobe tickled her interest in the flowers, native birds and animals. Georgiana was an artist specialising in miniature portrait painting, although both in Scotland and in her watercolours of Australian landscapes she showed her draughtsmanship.
