July  Headline:  Farewell to our founders of Sapporo Pioneers

30th Sapporo Toastmaster meeting

22 July, 1998 (Wed.)
Kaderu Hall 6F Josei Plaza

Is this the effect of El Nino or La Nina? Summer in Hokkaido is capricious.
We have a real Summer climate, while tsunami hit Papua New Guinea and
a there were floods in the USA.
On the night of July 22nd, 12 members enjoyed the meeting. We were very
pleased to have two guests, Miss Yuka Wada and Mr. Michael Benson as a guest
speaker. We hope to see their smiling faces and to hear their witty speeches
at the next meeting.

President Shiina opened the meeting with a story about the last Upper House
election. As Japanese politics changes, members of Sapporo Pioneers have to
change. The success of our TM Club greatly depends on the sprit,
involvement, and participation of our members.

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING LATELY . . .

Report of the 22nd July Meeting

Opening Thought:  TM Higuchi introduced a funny story about her mother. She is a sort of technophobic and invented a unique way to use a fax machine. She wanted to send a confidential letter, but she could not send it using her method. How come?

Today's word: "Elucidate",  Elucidation or Elucidating presented by TM Higuchi.

"Table Topic Session: TM Firkola chaired the session. He provided the very
stimulating and timely topic of the Japanese political situation. TM Shiina
acted as Kajiyama, the former Chief Cabinet Secretary, running for Prime
Minister. TM Takase pretended to be Koizumi, who is Welfare and Health
Minister, also a candidate for Prime Minister. He emphasized that he is the
youngest candidate in the governing Liberal Democratic Party Presidential
election. TM Higuchi played the role of Obuchi, who was appointed as a
successor to Hashimoto by his faction. TM Kamo acted as Makiko Tanaka and
asked Obuchi about "cold pizza."  Reporter TM Tsukada asked a question on
behalf of the nation. TM Firkola captivated the audience.

Current Issue  Topic: Consumption Tax. TM Ando presided the session. Tax
reduction was a big issue in the last Upper House election.
Most of the candidates frantically appealed for a reduction in consumption
tax or income tax in order to revive the ailing Japanese economy. TM Higuchi
and TM Farkola gave opposing opinions. The nation would save the money
refunded by a tax reduction at the post office and therefore the tax
reduction wouldn't stimulate the economy. TM Takeda expressed her offensive
opinion that several notorious religious groups are receiving privileges
with regard to tax. TM Yamada suggested that a new tax system would be one
option. That is: a new tax system could be introduced, changing the tax rate
for necessities and luxury commodities. Our guest, Mr. Benson elucidated the
situation in his home country, Britain.

Speech Session: We enjoyed two scheduled speeches and our guest, Mr.Benson's speech. They were the highlight of the meeting. TM Konishi gave her fourth speech. During her stay in Hawaii, she experienced a valuable
encounter with a Japanese woman who is from Sapporo and is married to an American. Konishi was impressed with the woman's life.

The second prepared speech was given by TM Masako Takeda. She succeeded in
her second speech with sincerity. She deplored the decline in the morals of
the younger generation.

The third speaker was Mr. Michael Benson. He is a British missionary and is involved in volunteer activities in Sapporo. A fateful encounter with Captain Tuck (a Briton who came to Japan in the 1890s) brought Mr. Benson to Japan. The title of his speech was "Spoonerisms." He gave the following
examples: If someone said "Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me pleasure to propose a toast to the guests," people would surely clap. But if someone said: "Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me pleasure to propose a ghost to the taste." There would be an embarrassed silence. Or how about: "Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me pleasure to propose a taste to the ghost." Still more embarrassed silence. Spoonerisms are an effective method to get the audience's attention.
Mr. Benson, thank you so much for taking time from your busy schedule to
give us such a wonderful speech!!
