    • The real von Trapps were great singers. They didn't sing for the first time in public, then just run away and climb some mountain. In fact, they sang at many different festivals, parties and concerts. Hitler even wanted the von Trapps to sing for him on his birthday but they didn't want to. They had refused him two other times and knew they could not refuse him again, so they decided to run away one night. They did go over the Alps, however, they went to Italy, not Switzerland.

    • This one man watch the Sound of Music movie twice a day - in the same theater - at the same seat - over 900 times. When they tore down the theater, the man bought the seat he sat on all those times.

    • One of Robert Wise's favorite memories of Julie Andrews was when she was traveling up the hill to do the opening scene by oxcart in a mink coat.

    • Peggy Wood's (Mother Abbess) wrinkles were taped back under her wimple because she was about 70 years old when she did the film.

    • Kym Karath's (Gretl) first crush was Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), who actually ended up taking her to her first prom in high school.

    • Nearly 600 extras were hired in Salzburg to do scenes like the wedding and the folk festival.

    • Dan Truhitte (Rolfe) joined the marinesafter music. After that, he opened up a dance studio in Sacramento where one of his students was actress Molly Ringwald. After he closed the studio, Dan moved to North Carolina where he now owns a second dance studio.

    • Angela Cartwright (Brigitta) and her husband own a gift shop called Rubber Boots and has been running for several years now.

    • Ben Wright's (Herr Zeller) last film was the voice of Grimsby in The Little Mermaid before he died on July 2, 1989.

    • There would be no Sound of Music if it wasn't for the real captain's 12 year old daughter, Maria, who had a rheumatic fever and needed a governess to teach her because she was not well enough to get out of bed and go to school. Eventually, she got better and the story went on from there.

    • The childrens' favorite adult to be around was uncle Max (Richard Haydn) because he was fun and nice. After a while, they began to call him Herr Dad. The Baroness (Eleanor Parker) was really nice to the them in real life too, the children loved her and she also liked them.

    • One day when they were filming at Salzburg, Duane Chase (Kurt) was bored and wanted to go exploring. So he went out on his bike for an adventure and caused everyone to panic, until later they've found him.

    • Anna Lee (Sister Margaretta) played Lila Quartemaine on General Hospital, the longest-running daytime drama produced on the West Coast, since the 80's.

    • Julie Andrews (Maria) had some problem singing and playing the guitar at the same time.

    -------------------

    • When Kym Karath (Gretl) came in to audition, she announced, "I'm here to interview for the part of the youngest child. I can sing and dance and have lots of acting experiences. I'm perfect for the part!". She was only five years old at the time, and of course, she won the role of Gretl.

    • After the movie was released, it soon got the name "The Sound of Money" as it was an incredible hit all over the world. The original release lasted 4 - 5 years in the United States. The Sound of Music soon replaced Gone with the Wind as the number one box-office champion of all time.

    -------------------

    • Charmian Carr almost didn't get the part of Liesl because Robert Wise thought her eyes were too blue and that it might look strange on the camera.

    • Charmian's little sister Darleen, was one of the four people added to the children's singing voice to make it sound stronger. She had a perfect pitch and a gift of singing ever since she was little. Whenever you hear a real high note sung by the children, it's actually Darleen Farnon's voice (later changed to Carr as well as her sister) .

    • The way Richard Haydn (Max) became an actor is very interesting. He was a banana planter in the Caribbean when one unfortunate day, a hurricane blew through his plantation. After the hurricane was gone, he was only left with a single tree. There happened to be a company nearby shooting a movie, so since he had no more bananas to care for and nothing better to do, he decided to become an actor.

    • Daniel Truhitte (Rolfe) have undergone the same hair bleaching treatment as Nicholas Hammond to make their hair blonde. When they went to Austria, they forgot the dye and had to use this German stuff. It burned very badly and Daniel's hair started to fall out. He had to start wearing wigs when he was about 22 years old. Daniel also ended up marrying Charmian Carr's double whom he met at the wedding scene. What's really weird is, her parent's name were Liesl and Rolfe!

    • Assistant director Ridgeway (Reggie) Callow's son, Alan Callow, was the Nazi who shouted, "They're gone!", when Max announces the von Trapp's name at the festival.

    • In the very last scene where the von Trapps 'climb up the mountain', Christopher Plummer was actually carrying Kym Karath's double because he complained that she was too heavy. She had gained so much weight that they had to keep adjusting her clothes so they wouldn't be too tight.

    • Christopher Plummer once stayed at the von Trapp's ski lodge in Stowe, Vermont when he was still a boy.

    • Charmian Carr (Liesl) has two books published about the Sound of Music. They are Forever Liesl and Letters to Liesl.

    -------------------

    • Bob Wise told Charmian Carr that her character, Liesl, needed some baby fat. She was 21 at the time and needed to look 16. Charmian was too thin and needed to gain some weight to look younger. It was hard for her, but she managed it. The dinner scene, when they were eating chocolate cake for dessert actually helped. They had to keep starting over and got a new piece of cake each time, and Charmian said that it was very delicious too. She also said that Sound of Music was the time she weighed most in her life.

    -------------------

    • Sound of Music, took the award for Best Editing, he explained his method as he accepted his award, "When in doubt, cut to Julie Andrews."

    -------------------

    • The Austrians and Germans were not thrilled that Hollywood was remaking two of their favorite movies (Die Trapp Family in 1956, and the sequel, Die Trapp Family in Amerika in 1958). They also felt that the Sound of Music was not authentic. Fox's German theaters went as far as to cut the last third of the movie and end the film at the wedding scene. The film was eventually restored, but boombed in Germany anyway.

    -------------------

    • The Sound of Music marked a dramatic turnaround for the 20th Century Fox. When the film garnered ten Academy Award nominations, it was the icing on the cake. Indeed, there is something universal in the story that people respond to. After the movie become the hit, many studios tried to duplicate the formula, but all of them failed.
