    • Edelweiss is a national emblem for Austria. It is a small white flower with velvety petals found above the timberline in the Alps. It is not indigenous to any other place in the world. Because it captures a folk music style and a feeling of nationalism, many people think that the song "Edelweiss" is an actual Austrian folk song or even the Austrian National Anthem. In reality, like the rest of the score of The Sound of Music, Rodgers and Hammerstein created it for the musical.

    Where in Austria?

    • The front of the Von Trapp's house where Maria runs to the door to meet the captain and the children for the first time and where the captain tears the Nazi flag after returning from their honeymoon was the Frohnburg Castle. It was built in the 17th century as a country house for the prince Archbishop.

    • The back of the Von Trapp's house, where Max and the captain drinks the 'famous' pink lemonade with the baroness and where the children fall into the adjacent lake was filmed in the Leopoldskron Castle. Rococo Leopoldskron Castle was once Archbishop's residence and was built in 1736. The Venetian room from the castle was copied and used as the ballroom for the interior shootings which were done in the studios.

    • The 'Wedding Scene' in the Sound of Music was filmed at The Cathedral of Mondsee. Located 25 kilometers East of the city, it was built in 1487 and the baroque Altar by Hans Waldburger dates back from 1626.

    • The scene where the Von Trapp Family sings "Do - Re - Mi", "Edelweiss" and "So long, Farewell" for the competition in front of Austrian people, where they made their escape before receiving their first prize, was filmed at The Rock Riding School (Festival House). The rocks used for the construction of the cathedral were cut out from Monchsberg, Austria. In 1693, Archbishop Johann Ernst Von Thun decided to use this cavity in the mountain and had a riding school built where tournaments were held. Today, the Rock Riding School is a theatre and one of the venues situated in the Festival District. The 'real' Von Trapp family sang there at a choir competition.

    • The Mirabell Garden, the place where Maria and the children dance around fountains and run up the steps singing "Do - Re - Mi". It is a colorful world of flowers and sculptures, artistically trimmed hedges and arbours, blossoms and watersputing fountains. The Mirabell Garden's characteristically large, symmetrical flowerbeds makes a good example of a typical baroque park.

    • The opening scene where Maria sings "The Sound of Music" and the end part where you hear "Climb Every Mountain" while the family climbs their way to leave the coutntry was filmed in Untersberg. Located 1853 meters above the Salzburg basin, it offers a great view across the region.

    • The scene where Maria stops at the fountain and splashes the water while singing "I Have Confidence" was filmed at The Residence Square. The Residence is a massive palace that was built in early 17th century and was once the Archbishops residence. The Residence Fountain is the largest baroque fountain outside Italy and was built between 1658 and 1661 - possible by an Italian artist Tomaso di Garona.

    • Nonnberg Abbey is the oldest female convent north of the Alps. It has been in continual existence since it was founded in the year 714 A.D. The Abbey on the Nonnberg is significant both for the real Trapp story as well as for the movie. After graduating from college, Maria Augusta von Kutschera took a train to Salzburg to present herself as a candidate for the novitiate of the Benedictine sisterhood. After serving as a governess outside the abbey she and Baron von Trapp married in the Abbey Church in 1927.

    • The glass gazebo from the movie is now located at Hellbrunn Castle just outside Salzburg. It is currently locked because many people tried to perform leaps like the one Charmian did in the movie and there were just too many broken bones.
