And then the next shot, which was done much later, you'll see that Gretl is carried out of the water by Louisa. According to Charmian Carr (Liesl) in her interview with a magazine, they had to stop filming the scene in order to revive Karath.

    • The story told in the musical is true, differing from the real story only in a few details. E.g. The family escaped in two automobiles and not on foot. The von Trapps did not return to Austria after World War II but settled in the USA. They first arrived in New York with only $4 in their pockets. At first they made their living as touring musicians. The Baron, who had been decorated submarine commander in the first world war, died in 1947. Maria von Trapp lived until the age of 82 at the von Trapp Family Music Camp in Vermont, called Little Austria. She died in 1987. Maria's only complaint about the musical was that it portrayed her as a "goody-goody".

    • Six burly Austrians were hired to pull the heavy car by two ropes while the captain and Max push from behind when they are leaving their home in Salzburg.

Although she was not badly injured, her right ankle was hurt and the scene was later shot with her leg wrapped and make-up covering the bandages.

    -------------------

    • Debbie Turner (Marta) had many loose teeth during the filming, so when they finally fell out, they were replaced with false teeth.

    -------------------

    • Two years before the musical made its Broadway Debut, Paramount bought the rights to the von Trapp Singers story intending to cast Audrey Hepburn as Maria, but when Hepburn declined, Paramount dropped plans for the film.

    -------------------

    • The movie was originally to be directed by William Wyler, who actually scouted locations and toyed with the script. He had a different film in mind; tanks crashing though walls and all of that war stuff. (whew! good thing that Robert Wise was the one who directed it, or we'll be watching a different kind of The Sound Of Music!)

    -------------------

    • Nicholas Hammond decided to become an actor after seeing the 1959 play of "My Fair Lady" starring Julie Andrews.

    -------------------

    • The last song Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together was "Edelweiss" in 1959. Hammerstein died at his farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on the morning of August 23, 1960, before the movie version of The Sound of Music was even made.

    -------------------

    • Rodgers didn't like the song "An Ordinary Couple" originally, so he changed the love song to "Something Good".

    -------------------

    • On the song, "So Long, Farewell", Kurt (Duane Chase) actually did the singing except for the high-note portion and the second syllable of '...good-BYEEEE'. According to an interview done by Tara on her radio program, the high-note part was sang by Charmian Carr's sister and dubbed in. Listen to the interview.
