Legs of Voyage

Planning for a world trip seems more managable when broken down to smaller geographic sections and time frames.

Also not being able to foresee circumstances ahead, I am taking things a step at a time. At this stage, all going well, I would like to follow the basic route outlined below

The sections are:

  • SE Asia Starting in May 1998, from Sydney, the entire east coast of Australia was cruised to Thursday Is, then Gove, Darwin, Bali, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
  • Indian Ocean Departing Malaysia October; Phuket, Thailand early January; Galle end January; Maldives early February; Aden, Yemen late February.
  • Red Sea We visited Eritrea in April, and sailed along the Sudanese and Egyptian coast. We travelled inland to see the temples and tombs at Karnak and Aswan, sailed along the nile on a felucca, and saw the pyramids and Cairo museum. The transit of the Suez Canal was made at the end of May.
  • Mediterranean In early June, visited Israel and Cyprus on the way to Turkey. The south coast of Turkey from Antalya to Bodrum was cruised from July to early August then Greek islands, Crete and West coast of Greece up to Corfu with my father. I visited my mate, Bill's family in Igoumenitsa.
Then continued on to Sicily where I spent many months, as I damaged the boat there and also fell in love. Continued on in 2007 to Malta, Tunisia, and back to Sicily and Italy where I slipped the yacht and worked in Australia for the summer there. From May 2008 continuing on to Sardinia, Corsica, French Riviera, Iberics, Spain, and arriving Gibraltar end of September for the Atlantic crossing.
  • Atlantic Ocean Planning to cross the Atlantic from late September, via Canary Islands, to Lesser Antilles, then cruise the Carribean for 3 months till end of February for the transit of the Panama Canal.
  • South Pacific This last stage would commence in February 2009, with the passage to Galapagos islands then a long 4-5 week sail across the doldrums to the Marquesas, then Tahiti, Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Caledonia, Coffs Harbour in September and returning to Sydney by the end of 2009.

The destinations and timings are flexible, and may not even eventuate but this is a guide.

Also see the route section for an overview of Weatherly's voyage or use the links in the centre of this page to view the specific sections.

This page shows my planned legs of the voyage. To see the actual stages completed in pictures and stories, go to the logbook page index and select a country from the list (ordered by most recent stories toward the top).

The chosen route crosses some of the more interesting parts of the world I have wanted to visit : SE Asia, the Red Sea and Egypt, Mediterranean Europe, the Carribean and South Pacific Islands.
