Route

I sailed from Sydney Harbour to Phuket, Thailand, from May 1998 till April 1999. (See SE Asia page).

I crossed the Indian Ocean from January to March 2006
(See logbook pages for story).

The Red Sea was transitted from April to June 2006
(See logbook pages for story).

I cruised around the Mediterranean Sea from June 2006 until September 2008 (See logbook pages for story).
I had a 9 month break in the middle to work in Australia when my funds ran out, for the umteenth time now.

I am attempting to continue my sailing plans to cross the Atlantic from September 2008 and then the Pacific Ocean during 2009.

Following is a map showing my planned sailing route westward around the world. Click on the map to expand, in a new window :

This Trade Wind route was chosen to minimise "uphill" sailing and rougher seas, and also for interest as a tourist.

Timing of the various stages plays a crucial role in safety and comfortable passages. For example, by leaving leaving Thailand in the first week in January, the chance of a typhoon in the Bay of Bengal is almost non-existent. Crossing the South Pacific in the winter months also reduces the risk of a tropical storm.

Also see the legs of Voyage section to see specific stages.

The chosen route crosses some of the more interesting parts of the world I have wanted to visit : SE Asia, the Red Sea and Egypt, Mediterranean Europe, the Carribean and South Pacific Islands.
