Atlas Shrugged, By Ayn Rand W.A.R Scale= 8.5 You've heard me talk about this book. You've heard me throw phrases at you. Now i'm rating it. What is this book? It's a philosophical view on society, politics, achievement, wants, needs, fears, hopes, gains, losses, industry and more. This would probably be the 3rd or 4th book i've read on philosophy but this isn't like anything i have read in the past. It gives you a story, and then the philosophy. Ok, a break down on the score: The book is really really really long. Towards the end there is like an 70 page speech to summerize everything. That's the killer. It's pretty slow some parts, and pretty fast in some other parts. The thing that you would most likely fear is the longness of this book. Its around 1100 pages, and the font is like size 10 or eight. The whole page is filled with words, words, and more words. You want a great book to tackle, go for it. Just be sure you know what it's saying and don't except what its saying until you thought about it. This book is supposed to make you think. So question the principles the book had said. Then evaluate. Don't just except them and go "sure why not." The story can be guessed in some parts, but its the dialog that can't be guessed. Lol, i started giggling at some of the things they said. not alot, but at some parts. Where you're like, "What the heck, that's not what i expected." The book has mild sexual content, and it talks about sex and stuff somewhat. I think who ever dares to read a huge book like this is a pretty mature reader so i don't think it matters to warn people to be mature. There is almost no violence in the beginning of this book. Then as you get near the end it becomes more violent. But vitually none. The violence isn't really described in any sickening way. Just guns, and telling you what happened. And then going on. So, its ok. It's not meant for you to focus on the violence. So yeah. The main conflicts in the book is a conflict of ideals. People struggle within themselves because they have conflicting ideals, or are preached conflicting ideals. It's a conflict between achievement and failure. Of odds and perseverence and stuff and such like that. Sometimes it might seem like its going against everything you're taught. Just analize and evaluate. This book requires it. Over all this book is just fantastic. It seems to have its own beat, you'll realize that you'll start to speed up in reading when plot is speeding up, and slowing down to evaluate when it wants you to slow down. You know it almost never talks about anything related to the title, and yet everything is related to the title. It only has like 1 paragraph in the whole book that actually states anything about the greek god Atlas. But you'll understand why it's named Atlas Shrugged. Read the book if you don't mind reading something really long. I really liked it, because it gives you alot of insight and thinking value. It challenges you to actually use your brain when you're reading this, because it might seem like its going against all logic or moral. lol, but it's not. Ok have fun reading. - Wei |
