The
10km strip of pristine beach south of Benaulim has become Goa's
upmarket resort beach, with at least six hotels of varying degree of
luxury. As far as resorts go, some of them are quite good -
being self contained luxury bubbles - and they are certainly
isolated from anything that might disturb the peace. Varca is
5km south of Benaulim and Cavelossim, with an impressive church, is
7km further on.
If
you're planning on riding down to Palolem, this road is more
enjoyable than taking the national highway from Margao and there are
a couple of things to see en route. To get across the estuary
you'll need to take the ferry from Cavelssim to Asolna - turn left
at the sing saying 'village panchayat Cavelossim' before you get to
Mobor, and continue for 2km to the river. From there you can
continued to the fishing village of Betul.
The
road from Betul to Agonda winds over hills and is pretty rough in
places. You can detour to the old Portuguese fort of Cabo da
Rama. There's not a lot to see, but the views from the ruined
ramparts are good.
Agonda,
the next village, has an empty 2km stretch of sand and several
places to stay. This place is popular with travelers wanting
to escape the resort scenes, but with Palolem already getting
overcrowded, the peace probably won't last. About 1km past the
village, along the beach road, you'll find a string of small
guesthouses. |
