Margao (Madgaon)
|
|
Population:
79,8000
The
capital of Salcete province, Margao is the main population center of
South Goa and is probably the busiest town in the state - the
traffic in the town center makes Panaji look positively comatose.
Though
Margao is not really great interest to travelers, the richly
decorated Church of the Holy Sprit is worth a visit, and the covered
market is the best of its kind in Goa.
Around
8 December, Margao celebrates the Feat of Our Lady of the Immaculate
Conception with large fair |

Around Margao
|
| About
6km from Margao, near the village of Raia, is the Rachol Seminary
and Church. The Museum of Christian Art here has some
interesting displays including textiles, some of the silver once
used in the churches of Old Goa, a magnificent 17th-century silver
monstrance in the shape of a swan, and a mobile mass kit (complete
with candlesticks) - standard issue for missionaries out in the
jungle. The museum is open from 9am to 1pm and 2 to 5pm
Tuesday to Sunday (Entry is Rs. 5).
The church dates
from 1610 and the seminary has interesting architecture, a decaying
library and paintings of Christian characters done in Indian
style. This is not tourist site, so you should ask before
wandering around.

Margao - Getting there and
Away
|
| Bus
All local buses operate from the busy Kadamba bus terminal north
of the town, but many also stop at the old bus stand in the center
of the town. Catch buses to Colva and Benaulim from Kadamba or
from the bus stop on the east side of the Municipal Gardens.
There are hourly
buses to Colva from around 7am to 7pm (Rs. 5, 20 minutes).
Some go via Benaulim. Buses to Panaji run every 15 minutes and
take about an hour. There are around eight buses a day direct
to Palolem and others heading to Karwar that stop in nearby Chaudi.
There are also local buses to Vasco, Ponda, Chandor and Rachol.
There are many
private bus agents in the town center near the GDTC Tourist Hotel.
Train
Margao's new station is about 1.5km east of the town center;
vehicle access is via the road south of the train line, not
Staion Road (which leads to the now closed old station).
If you're walking there, however, you can cross the tracks
at the footbridge past the old station. There is a reservation
hall within the main building. Visit our Indian
Railways section for more details.
