Palolem
is arguably Goa's most beautiful and idyllic beach - the argument
being whether or not the addition of wall-to-wall beach shacks
beneath those leaning palms has spoilt it. In any case, the
sweeping crescent of white sand fringed by a shady rim of coconut
palms is a postcard picture. The beach is hemmed in a either
end by rocky crags and there's a small island (Green Island) off the
northern tip that you can walk across to at low title.
Palolem
is remote in the sense that it's the most southerly of Goa's
developed beaches, but in the last few years it has really been
discovered. During the high season the beach is crowded with a
mix of day-trippers coming down from Colva and and Cavelossim,
travelers drifting down down from the northern beaches t chill out,
and baleful long-termers wondering what what the hell happened to
their paradise.
Still,
the development is very earthy and Palolem remains to this day one
of Goa's laid-back beaches. Most accommodation is in simple
(though increasingly sophisticated) beach huts or in villagers'
homes, with a handful or more solid guesthouses scattered around.
Palolem
village is nested in the palms back from the beach. All the
facilities you need are there, including Internet access, some
pretty good restaurants, motorcycle hire and foreign exchange
(through several travel agencies). |
