Calangute & Baga - Introduction
|
|
Calangute's
heyday as the Mecca of all expat hippies has passed - it's now the
Mecca of package tourists winging in from the UK. These days -
in high season at least - central Calangute is the most over hyped,
overpriced, overcrowded strip of mayhem in Goa.
The
beach is long and sandy, but it isn't one of the best in Goa and
many people will find it far too crowded - dotted, as it is, with
sun beds, deck chairs and slowly burning bodies. There is,
however, plenty going on, and lots of good places to stay and eat. |
Calangute & Baga - Orientation and
Information
|
| Most
services cluster around a single street, where you'll find the
market and bus stand. Bank of Baroda, on the main Anjuna road
near the market, gives cash advance on MasterCard or Visa. (Still
don't have a credit card? Click here to get
one !) And there are many exchange offices scattered
around that will change cash or travelers' cheques, including a
branch of Thomas Cook. Centurion Bank, about 100m south on the
main road, has a 24-hour ATM accepting MasterCard and Cirrus, but
not Visa.
There are plenty of
Internet Cafes around Calangute and many hotels offer Internet
access for guests. The standard charge is Rs. 1 per minute.

Calangute & Baga -
Things to do and see
|
| The
Kerkar Art Complex in South Calangute has a gallery with paintings
and sculptures on sale by the owner, Dr. Kerkar and local artists.
Goan Bananas and
Atlantis both operate water sports and boat trips about halfway
along the beach between Calangute and Baga. Parasailing is Rs.
1000, banana-boat rides Rs. 350, water skiing Rs. 600 and
windsurfing Rs. 350 per hour.
To complement
Anjuna's long-running market, there's now a night market across the
Baga River in an area known as Arporva. It's held every
Saturday night and is quite a lively affair with musicians, food
stalls and the usual weird and wonderful souvenir stalls and
traders.
Calangute hosts the
Youth Fete, a music and dance festival, part of Beach Bonanza, held
from mid-April.
