ABSTRACTS OF RIMCU PUBLICATIONS

The following are the abstracts of some of the research papers from RIMCU: (click q for links to other websites)
q   Sealza, Lita. 1995. Factors Affecting the Family Planning Program Drop-Out Rate in Bukidnon, Philippines. Manila: Research Institute for Mindanao Culture, Xavier University and the Population Council.
Abstract:  Drop out rates among family planning (FP) acceptors can be reduced by informing clients about possible side effects and the advantages and disadvantages of several methods. Local government support for the FP program and the attitude of husbands toward FP are also important
factors.
q   Morales, Beethoven. 1999. Power Relations in Filipino Households: The Case of Southern Philippines. PSSC Social Science Information 27 (2): 29-39.
Abstract:  The study finds that much of the power relations in Filipino households can be explained by the "gender" perspective. However, the other results of the study show that some of the variance of the differing levels of power between husband and wife in household decision-making can also be explained by the "resource-power" perspective.
q   Burton, Erlinda. 1999. The Effects of Training on the Traditional Birth Attendants as Auxiliary Workers in Reproductive Health Care: A Philippine Case. PSSC Social Science Information 27 (2): 54-60.
Abstract:  The effects of training on the untrained TBAs have been very positive for they have been shown a new horizon in maternal and child health care. While the training was weak in certain areas, it helped in a short time to improve the skills of the TBAs who are very appreciative of the new knowledge.
q   Burton, Erlinda. 1993. Upland Population and Sustainable Agriculture. Cagayan de Oro: Research Institute for Mindanao Culture.
Abstract:  The study concludes that the population in the upland should be maintained at a certain level according to the carrying capacity of the land in order that the resources needed to sustain them remain stable in the remaining years ahead.
q   Cabaraban, Magdalena and Beethoven Morales. 1999. The Social and Economic Consequences of Family
Planning Use in Southern Philippines. Cagayan de Oro: Research Institute for Mindanao Culture and Family Health International.
Abstract:  The study suggests that urban and rural women's groups should work collaboratively to develop advocacy and education programs for women, including programs that provide counseling, information, education, and training on reproductive health, gender and sexuality.
q   Pagtolun-an, Imelda and John Ballweg. 1996. The Risk of Childbearing: A Philippines Study of Pregnancy Complications and Maternal Mortality. Cagayan de Oro: Research Institute for Mindanao Culture and International Union for the Scientific Study of Population.
Abstract:  The study examined the impact of maternal care on the incidence of pregnancy complications and on identifying factors associated with maternal death. The fact that many women experienced complications despite receiving prenatal care suggests that for many, such care is seen  as  a  curative  service  rather  than  a  preventive
exercise.
q   Echavez, Chona and Ma. Luisa Tumang. 1999. Changing Views, Changing Roles, Changing Lives: The PhilDHRRA Mindanao GAD Mainstreaming Experience. Cagayan de Oro: PhilDHRRA Mindanao and the Lutheran World Relief-New York.
Abstract:  This monograph brings together 13 case studies that reflect how individuals, people's organizations, and non-government organizations responded to women's and men's needs in their respective communities. It also documents their attempts to reduce existing gender inequities.
