The Research Institute for Mindanao Culture (RIMCU) is currently the
main research unit of Xavier
University in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. It conducts
research
on critical social, political, economic and environmental issues that affect
Mindanao and other regions in the Philippines. The Institute is supported
largely by contracts and grants from government agencies and private organizations.
The Institute holds office at the fourth floor of the Social Science Building
on the main campus of Xavier University.
RIMCU also serves as a resource and training center for individuals, groups,
and institutions in the Mindanao region that are concerned with special
topics and issues. It is also committed to playing an active role
in building the research and teaching capabilities of individuals and groups
throughout the Mindanao region. To strengthen its ability to realize
these objectives, RIMCU maintains a library available for limited public
use. RIMCU's library contains over 5,000 volumes, reports and journals,
many of which pertain specifically to Mindanao. Among these volumes
are the results of locally, nationally, and internationally-funded studies
that have been conducted by RIMCU for more than 40 years.
The research associates of RIMCU teach only one or two courses every semester
to enable them to work full-time on research. They also offer consultancy
and advisory services concerning current issues, research techniques, training
programs and development projects to various governmental and non-governmental
agencies in Mindanao. Many of RIMCU's research associates conduct,
on a regular basis, training programs for
junior and senior-level personnel who are interested in research techniques,
statistical analysis, and computer applications.
RIMCU is closely linked with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
of Xavier University. Most of the research associates of RIMCU are
affiliated with the department and RIMCU's resources, including the library,
have been utilized by the department in its teaching programs. RIMCU's
strength in research has also been utilized by the department to strengthen
the capability of its students to do research. Among others, students
are encouraged to participate in RIMCU's research projects and to utilize
RIMCU's resources, including its computer equipment and its extensive database,
for thesis or dissertation requirements. This partnership and collaboration
with RIMCU has enabled the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of
Xavier University to earn the distinction of having one of the best and
strongest programs in sociology in the whole country. In fact, in
1999, the Philippine government's Commission on Higher Education bestowed
on the department the distinction of being one of the country's (three)
Centers of Excellence for Sociology Education.
